Can i setup a reg. 5.1 surround sound on my computer?

I was wondering if it was possible to use my 5.1 surround sound system that I use for my tv on my computer. It has a large receiver and all, so if my computer supports 5.1, could i connect it to the reciever via a coxial connection?

I was poking around with digital coaxial hookups to receivers and you don't get 5.1 with games or anything else that isn't using pre-encoded Dolby Digital streams. So DVD's or media files with AC3 will pass the 5.1 to the receiver no problem. Games would get the sound encoded to a digital stream but there will only be 2.1 sound.

After all my searches on the net, I figure it's better to connect your PC to the receiver by analog connections. It would be nice to have the coaxial cable to reduce cable clutter but you only get 5.1 with DVD's.
