Re: X800 GT, worth the upgrade?

Just opened up my pc and found a small problem. The 7800GT from overclockers says it needs 400W, i just checked my power supply, its 300W.

Is this really a problem? Will i need to replace my power supply?

Re: X800 GT, worth the upgrade?

I run my x800 on my standard psu and its meant to have 400w. Its not a problem for me but i cant say the same as your card may be more power hungry.
PSU's can be quite cheap but dont go for the cheapest 400w one. You can check out e-buyers here
http://www.ebuyer.com/customer/produ...==&cat_uid=149
and c if u find something suitable.

Will do thanks, its more the hassle of installing it rather than the price

Re: X800 GT, worth the upgrade?

The wattage of your PSU is important, but so is the brand. A good PSU rated for 300 watts will outperform a bad PSU rated for 500 any day of the week. Your best bet would probably be to try to run things on your current PSU. If anything explodes/restarts for no reason/etc. then you know it's time to upgrade your power supply. Otherwise you're good.

NEVER go cheap on a psu, buy cheap buy twice is my motto, you wont be happy if a shoddy psu whipes out your main board and takes your gpu and ram with it.

Re: X800 GT, worth the upgrade?

Consistent and steady power is very impotant. I agree with Xink, don't cut costs with the psu. A good psu can run $100. Anything less than $40 is getting close to the cheap stuff.

Re: X800 GT, worth the upgrade?

When I replaced mine I just searched for a popular model on newegg and ended up with an Enermax 400w. No complaints here, and it's probably the easiest component to replace in your box. Just 4 screws and power cables to connect and you're all done.

Re: X800 GT, worth the upgrade?

The x800 gt sucks ati does not support it I had to clock it down because it overheated if you get it clock the memory at 300 and the core at 400 or you will get artifacting
