I noticed recently, that, when viewing thread search results in the forums, including "New Posts", I had to take my eye 800 to 900 pixels due east, per row, in order to see the name of the forum to which the displayed thread belonged.

That slows me down considerably, and I've changed it for myself by authoring a userscript for use in the Greasemonkey Firefox extension. Anyone may use it if he likes. I've called it, simply, Search Results Legend.

The userscript adds icons and colored borders to the leftmost cell of the rows which render search results in the forums. The additions tell you information about the forum in which the thread resides, as well as whether or not you've participated in that thread.

The game forums should be represented by icons you recognize as game icons (I did the best I could). The non-game forums are represented by whatever I could find that seemed appropriate. If you can give me a better icon (it must approximately 16x16 -- any file format is fine) for ANY of the forums you see represented by icons, PLEASE DO, as I am NOT SKILLED at artistic stuff (even finding random icons online to use isn't my craft).

The colors of the borders have meaning:

Red (top/bottom): the forum displayed is an "Administration" or "Official" forum
Blue (top/bottom): the forum displayed is a "Tactics" forum
Purple (top/bottom): the forum displayed is a "Technical Support" forum
Black (dashed, right): the thread displayed contains at least one post by you
Red (dashed, left): the thread displayed is closed

If you see "NEED ICON" in the cell, it means I don't yet have an icon for that forum. Again, feel free to GET ME ONE (see dimensions above).

I'm not thrilled about all of the icons. Those that weren't given me had to be found by myself online. Some I don't like at all. As a whole, I don't like that some are square and some are rounded. See the next paragraph for the concerns I didn't see coming until I had this thing built.

Ideally, you guys can find me icons which are square and look really nice. Or maybe all the game-specific icons are square, and all of the non-game icons are perfectly circular. I don't know. I just know that the left side of my screen looks really busy now. While the script still meets its purpose (quick identification of the forum in which the thread resides) just fine, it's far from "beautiful," aesthetically.

Also, I still am in need of icons (anything, really) for the following forums:

Armed Assault
Falcon 4
Simulation Games

Anything anyone can do to help is appreciated.

Well, it'll take some time before I'm able to recognize them without shifting my focus to them, but, even so, tonight's perusal seemed to go a bit faster! I look forward to learning these icons AND FireFox.

Well, I just started using GreaseMonkey but must not be doing something correctly because I'm not seeing it. The script is installed and Enabled and seems to kick in correctly because when I go to New Posts the script is listed and has a green checkmark, I'm just not seeing anything different.

Is there some setting somewhere in Firefox in general that I need to check?

This sounds like a great script. I installed it but for some reason the search functuion here on the forums doesn't seem to be working at all. It also isn't working under IE Beta 7.

Where do you see a green checkmark, exactly?

What version of Greasemonkey are you running?

I've got GreaseMonkey 0.6.4 installed and the Search Results Legend script was installed successfully. I've verified the script is enabled and GM itself is enabled. Here is a screenshot of my New Posts results. Seems to be the same as before even though the script shows it is running when the New Posts results are displayed.

I'm seeing the same as Assassin using FireFox 1.5.0.1 and GreaseMonkey 0.6.4. It doesn't work with Opera's UserJS either.

It's not "end-user easy," Cing, but it's nothing you can't handle. Details within a week.

Wyzcrak Join Date: May 2003 Location: Memphis, TN Posts: 14,139	Search Results Legend I noticed recently, that, when viewing thread search results in the forums, including "New Posts", I had to take my eye 800 to 900 pixels due east, per row, in order to see the name of the forum to which the displayed thread belonged. That slows me down considerably, and I've changed it for myself by authoring a userscript for use in the Greasemonkey Firefox extension. Anyone may use it if he likes. I've called it, simply, Search Results Legend. The userscript adds icons and colored borders to the leftmost cell of the rows which render search results in the forums. The additions tell you information about the forum in which the thread resides, as well as whether or not you've participated in that thread. The game forums should be represented by icons you recognize as game icons (I did the best I could). The non-game forums are represented by whatever I could find that seemed appropriate. If you can give me a better icon (it must approximately 16x16 -- any file format is fine) for ANY of the forums you see represented by icons, PLEASE DO, as I am NOT SKILLED at artistic stuff (even finding random icons online to use isn't my craft). The colors of the borders have meaning: Red (top/bottom): the forum displayed is an "Administration" or "Official" forum Blue (top/bottom): the forum displayed is a "Tactics" forum Purple (top/bottom): the forum displayed is a "Technical Support" forum Black (dashed, right): the thread displayed contains at least one post by you Red (dashed, left): the thread displayed is closed If you see "NEED ICON" in the cell, it means I don't yet have an icon for that forum. Some I don't like at all. As a whole, I don't like that some are square and some are rounded. See the next paragraph for the concerns I didn't see coming until I had this thing built. Ideally, you guys can find me icons which are square and look really nice. Or maybe all the game-specific icons are square, and all of the non-game icons are perfectly circular. I don't know. I just know that the left side of my screen looks really busy now. While the script still meets its purpose (quick identification of the forum in which the thread resides) just fine, it's far from "beautiful," aesthetically. Also, I still am in need of icons (anything, really) for the following forums: Armed Assault Falcon 4 Simulation Games Anything anyone can do to help is appreciated. __________________ Steam Community? The script is installed and Enabled and seems to kick in correctly because when I go to New Posts the script is listed and has a green checkmark, I'm just not seeing anything different. Is there some setting somewhere in Firefox in general that I need to check? __________________

I've verified the script is enabled and GM itself is enabled. Here is a screenshot of my New Posts results.
