AMD 4800 From $626 http://www.pricewatch.com/prc.aspx?i=3&a=318272

Either way I cannot afford any of them!!! Just out of curiosity, do you guys have all the crazy import taxes we do in the states? And what is the market price over there?

Thanks!
The Big C
the P950D is NOT the top end CPU so please don't state that they are cheaper.... because it's obvious they are if you are comparing the 3rd or 4th product in intel's line vs the 1st and 2nd in AMD's line that the Intel will be cheaper

P955D = £750
P950D = £470

FX60 = £751
X2 4800 = £444

So they are directly compairable in price.....

UK prices are often VERY **** compaired to what ive seen in the UK.

For instance Graphics card prices are often direct conversions of US price, 1:1 instead of exchange rate converted... Hence the phase "Rip off Britain"

yes and no...

yes its going to be a short dip in performance at the start, and yes, it will recover as the Cores are redesigned, or the memory manufactures start making lower latency memory.

However future proofing? I'm not so sure, after all, DDRIII is getting close to being desktop too... and DDRIII is more like DDRI when it comes to latencies, yet as we know from graphics cards, its miles faster....

Myself... I'm lucky enough to have a high end 939 system now, so i will probably be waiting till AMD's 65nm CPU process. The first AM2 boards will be just the current cpus with a new memory controller... so exact same. I expect the first 65nm CPUs out around April 2007...I'm not sure. 65nm Process should bring a marginal speed increase and by then I'm hoping PC6400 ram will be mainstream.

The second reason is the that the DDR II support is a proven technology there on the Intel based boards already, this is one area where AMD has fallen behind, but thats about it. Anyway, I am just saying give Intel a chance. But if you do just remember that they have faults as well, primarily the whole heat thingy- they run almost twice as hot!! That is a inexspensive fix with some water cooling, still keeping you under the AMD cost.
Just my .02 cents.
i switched to AMD about 5 years ago... when intel was the expensive brand, and AMD was the cheaper way to go, and ever since then, i have had half the problems, so i am sticking with what causes the least amount of problems, heat is a small concern too, intel = hot, even with high-efficiency cooling, my computer room will be where the heat goes... and it is a good 5* hotter then the rest of the house as is =P

Re: AGP vs PCIe

I recently upgraded my system to include a 4400+ dual core, an EVGA 7800gt card and an ASUS 32 delux SLI. Running SLI right now, I'm not noticing too much of a difference in playing PC games, so I would recommend going with one gfx card for the moment. However, I would have to insist on going with a PCI-express when upgrading a system or looking for upgradability.

On that note, I would recommend going w/PCI-e just because the AGP is being phased out IMHO. Unless you can wait till the new sockets come out(M2 etc I think), I would go with PCI-e just for the ability to upgrade.
