What is a good disk defragger for XP?

I've always like Symantec's degraggers... That's what Windows used to use, but if you use Norton Utilities, it will also prioritize your files based on their usage.

I use Diskeeper. The Windows defrag is based on it but the retail version is much better than what Windows has. I use the scheduling system to defrag every night and it only takes about five minutes.

Agreed. I have the scheduler configured such that it can "have its way" with my box every night between 4 and 7 AM. It keeps my disk very orderly.

Diskeeper is nice to.... in a famous mans words, "Set it and Forget IT"

But I find no real speed increase in different defrag programs. The only way to find a nice speed increase is to format you harddrive and reinstall windows then defrag first thing.

I was under the assumption that since XP doesnt use fat32 that you really didnt need to defrag your system...

My XP uses Fat32. NTSF is slow and I don't need the security it provides. XP never crashes for me so FAT32 works great.

Just as long as you have less than saaay, 16 gigs per partition. certainly not more than 32.

Check out PerfectDisk by Raxco. I love this defrag program. It's not free but has a 30 day free trial, or at least it did. It defrags my machine better than any program I've tried and it's a single pass defragger. It also can be scheduled and run over a network so you can defrag other machines from one single point.

Not sure if the others do this, but the thing I like about PerfectDisk is that it will not only defrag but also optimize the placement of frequently used files. I do this reqularly when my machine starts to drag a bit and can notice a significant performance boost.

I Have this and am using it. I like it. Also I have Diskkeeper, and its great too. Diskkeeper wont install on my XP machine... Says it is supposed to...

10, 13, and 30.

C:= 10 gig partition
D:= 13.6 gig partition and seperate drive
E:= 30 gig logical partition off C:'s drive.

Works beautifully.

O&O Defrag is an excellent program as well. Its not free, but certainly worth it.

NTFS doesnt need it as often as FAT32, but it still needs it

I also use XP Fat 32 system so I can read other Fat 32 drives. If master is in NTSF mode and you are using an ATA card to use other hard drives, they also have to be NTSF. Otherwise they will not read or FS properly. So Fat 32 is a great format, and I personally recommend staying with it, at least until it becomes obsolete!!!
