Commodore 64 with a floppy disk drive that was almost the same size as the computer. Lots of good gaming memories on that one. My first Intel computer was a 486SX 33Mhz with 4MB of RAM. I didnt even have a math co-processor in that one just to cut down on the costs.

    Re: Your first Computer

Everybody in my class got a Sinclair ZX-80. 1kb of memory - I didn't go for it. Not the VC-20 either (VIC which stands for Video Interface Chip is pronounced like fick in German which is a recreational activity not normally associated with computers in those days at least.) 20x40 characters :-(

The C-64 with it 64kb of bank-switched memory and it's undocumented graphics facilities was a huge step forward.

When everybody went for the 8-bit 8088 PC machines I got the Atari ST - which had the 16 bit 68000 processor - programmable without FAR pointers and other gruesome constructs. It's GEM graphics system would support multitasking in the next version. It never did but it was lightyears ahead of Windows. You could even run Mac software on it.

What was your first programming language?

For me it was BASIC of course on the Commodore 3032 in school. Then 6502 assembler and then Pascal in class (10th grade). Later I got the Forth module for my C-64 and then started with C on the Atari ST. Lattice C was my favorite.

When I went to work I got into C++ which was cool then. Today it's Java.

Apple II+ w/64KB and a 9" portable sony color TV as monitor. I'm guessing but I think it was around $2k-ish.

Programs loaded from a cassette tape deck at first. When we got a floppy drive for it it was like a gift from god. Used to use a hole punch to make single sided 5 1/4 floppies double sided.

Some years later we had accumulated 5 various Apple II+/IIe machines and probably 8 5 1/4 floppy drives for them. They were laying around acting as door stops and dust collectors. I really wish I had kept one just to have around even if just as a door stop.

    Re: Your first Computer

The first computer my dad bought when I was an infant was The Osbourne.

Over the years, we successively upgraded through the Apple IIe, Macintosh (512K), Macintosh SE, and then our first x86 based system was a 486/33SX, with 8MB RAM and Windows 3.1.

The first computer I bought was when I turned 18. It was manufactured by Seanix, was a Pentium 200 (without MMX ) incl. a hefty 32MB of RAM, an utterly massive 2GB harddrive and a 17" monitor, all for the low low price of ~$4500.

My first computewas my dad's ZX-81 (with massive 8k memory upgrade), but the first computer I really used a bunch was my dad's BBC micro a few years later (I was too young to do much with the ZX-81). The first computer I owned myself though was an Amiga A-500.
