Re: Yet another Upgrade Question

Yea. Its tough to decide how to do this a little at a time. Is there a mobo that will run DDR and DDR2 memory and if it would run a P4 and Core 2 duo thats a added bonus? I have 4 GB of PC3200 Corsair XMS which isn't horrible memory. Prolly highly unlikely that any mobo will run pci express AND agp8x ![]() |

Re: Yet another Upgrade Question
There are motherboards which will run both DDR and DDR2 RAM and a Pentium 4/D. For example: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813157092
However, I don't know of any that are Core 2 Duo compatible. The ASrock also onlyhas 2 DDR slots and 2 DDR2 slots and AGP with no PCIe. They also made a couple motherboards in the past which had both AGP and PCIex16 slots, but I don't think any of those are Core 2 Duo compatible either.

Re: Yet another Upgrade Question
I think the ASRock boards are the only ones that have a mix n' match for memory and video cards. It's not really that great of an option for the long run. You'll have to ditch half your RAM because it's 2 DDR slots and 2 DDR2 slots. You lose space for PCI slots, which may make a difference if you have other PCI cards other than a sound card.
Sordavie is right though. I don't think there are any ASRock boards that support Conroe along with DDR1 and AGP. Your best bet is with AMD. There are ASRock boards that have S939 sockets but you can buy an upgrade module for $30 that allows you to use AM2 and DDR2. Unfortunately, using AM2 means you can't use DDR1 but at least that board has the option of moving to AM2 and DDR2. Save up and dish out for a full upgrade to DDR2 and PCI-e DX10. Right now, Core 2 is what you want but that may change later in 2007 when AMD and Intel do a quad core battle. |

Re: Yet another Upgrade Question
It really is an all or nothing proposition when your stepping from socket 478,ddr and agp. Mobo,Memory,Processor,Vid are required.
thanks for the insight tho, I've been tossing this around in my head for a while. |

New 45nm quad INtel or 65nm quad AMD, depends on whats better, intel might be cheaper though cause of the die shrink, and current R600 ati or maybe r700/G90 based video card. Point is, with your specs you can still hold it off until until next Xmas too, and get a much better comp or atleast same comp you want to get now but much cheaper.
