I disagree. I'm running a machine that is based very similar to what's listed below (but twice the memory) and haven't come across a game that I can't run with high settings. Upgrading a year or two behind the cutting edge can save you a LOT of money. I paid more than three times the price to get this stuff back in May of 2005!

the ASUS 939 socket is now obsolete it's like updating from a standard PCI to an AGP. 939 is not getting any new chips there last and final chip is the FX-60. So if you ever want to upgrade you can't you'd have to buy a new MOBO then new memory to compliment and then your out big bucks again.

Re: Bang for the Buck

Remember if you go with an AM2 socket (which you probably should at this point) you'll have to buy new RAM too, as it's DDR2.

I agree with cingular. The amount of performance you will get from that $200 investment will give you at least a year, probably two. Two years from now anything you buy now will be "obsolete". (And, unless it is for ego, the performance gain will not be missed.)

He can then save the extra money for the new graphics card.

On the memory mixing thing I am running mixed brands right now. New egg shipped the wrong stuff and I used it anyway. The boost going from 1 gig to 2 will greatly overshadow the loss due to different brands. (This is assuming the current memmory can be used.)

But the FX-60 would be worlds better than what he has, so in a year or two when he needs to upgrade he can get that chip, and still not have to get a new mobo. Not everyone needs the newest best thing. Before May 06 I was running a 1.4 ghz Tbird with 512 ram. It did what I needed up to the point I upgraded to my current box, an Amd 64 3000+ with 2 gig of ram. The only upgrade I will need to do in the next 1-2 years for my personal use will be a new vid card possibly, and then if I want I can get one of the FX chips for a pretty low price as well, and that will last me another couple of years. It all depends on your situation and what you need.
