Re: What do yall think of my new rig i just ordered?

I agree with Apophis. I've haven't trusted Western Digital in the last 10 years. Seagate and Samsung drives have proven their durability, quietness, and quick access times.

I can't comment on Hitachi drives since they took over production of the Deskstar's from IBM. I have one in my brother's computer, give me another few years and I can tell you if it survives No comment on HP's drives either, too many mix reviews and happenings.

Re: What do yall think of my new rig i just ordered?

PC gamer very well might suggest it! It doesn't mean that Western Digital hasn't been plagued with reliability issues for years nor does it mean that their MTBF numbers just don't seem to jive with reality.

A lot of magazines and authors recommend products based on specifications only and never use the products long enough to find out how well a company is actually building them. It's not uncommon. I'm sure you've encountered that sort of thing numerous times in the past building all those extreme machines for the past 12, err, 9 years.

I know, I know.. I'm being overly facetious.

Re: What do yall think of my new rig i just ordered?

I will add my experiance. I have had two drives fail, both western digital.

I have a seagate that is older than the hills and sat in a box with a bunch of other junk for about 1.5 years. Then I gave it to my mother to store some of her pictures. Before that it was well used in a SQL server. (It is 500 meg and it wasn't small at the time if that tells you anything)

I plugged it in the other day and got the data off of it.

Seagate for me.

Yeah, that's pretty much all I use these days too. Don't get me wrong, I have had Seagate drives fail. But I've also managed dozens and dozens of workstatations and a datacenter full of IBM, Dell and HP servers and the failure rates for Western Digital and Maxtor were through the roof in comparison to the Seagate Barracudas.

Don't even get me started on the old Micropolis drives. I had so many of those fail I knew the RMA folks at Micropolis on a first name basis. At one point I just started shipping them back and they would send out new ones, the new ones just went in a closet and never got used. It was just too risky putting them in a high availability environment when I knew they would end up failing within a few months.

From what I understand, you can't beat the Raptor for speed, so use it for your OS and maybe a couple of games. For all your storage needs, use a higher capacity 7200 RPM drive. Maxtor and Seagate both have fantastic warranties. My main drive is a 2 year old Hitachi Deskstar and my storage drive is a newer Maxtor. No complaints here.

That's the thing. I'm not as worried about speed as I am stability. When it comes to most hard drives, unless you're doing SERIOUS non-linear video editing or dealing with massive temporal databases, you'll hardly see any real world improvements out of most of these drives. People seem to love obsessing over numbers that really have little to do with real-world performance.

Just because a company has a good warrantee doesn't mean I want to buy their stuff either. I'd prefer the drive just NOT FAIL on me. Micropolis had a great warrantee, 10 years long! That was fantastic! Except for the amount of downtime I experienced due to the drives failing in the first place...

I'm still running some 80 gig Seagate Barracuda drives that I bought the moment Seagate released the things several years ago. They still fun flawlessly. In that same period of time I have replaced two Western Digital drives and three Maxtor drives. I still have their rotting carcasses at home if anyone wants them to send in for warrantee replacement. I sure as hell won't use them any more. I'm running some Sun Ultra 5 workstations with dual Seagate Barracuda 40GB drives in them that I've had for near 10 years!

Re: What do yall think of my new rig i just ordered?

PC Gamer and almost all of the magazines don't recommend based on reliability and stability.

And as Apophis can attest to, Western Digital is not known for reliability. 4 of the 5 drives I've owned from WD has failed on me. And this fifth drive is on it's last legs (bad clusters already reported on disk). Seagate are the most reliable and Samsung is fast becoming a very stable and quiet drive manufacturer. I still have a 20 gig Seagate ATA-66 from some 5+ years ago in perfect working order. I still own my Samsung drive (going on 3 years now) and it's survived through 2 rebuilds, no problems, still super quiet, and it was cheaper than Seagate at the time (pricier than Seagate now ).

Ah nice pick I'm getting Samsung's version of that for my next system. And for $80 it's a steal!
