Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

Main risks? Complete and total destruction of the CPU, motherboard, memory and potentially any peripheral plugged into the PCI bus.

Your approach to this is "I'm going to buy this CPU and OC it to 3.6GHz" when it should most likely be "I'm going to buy this CPU and see what I can OC it to safely". There is a distinct yet critical difference between the two.

Further, you might want to bear in mind that without years of effort from Apophis, this community wouldn't be here. We tend to show him respect out of appreciation, rather than because it's an absolute requirement for all who post here.

Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

KoreXT, buddy. The internet is an amazing resource. The information you're going after is readily available with a few minutes of google searching. Tom's hardware, already linked, is a great place to start.

You've got a powerful rig ordered, and the Duo is a readily overclockable chip, I should know - I just overclocked mine.

Read as much as you can about overclocking from the wealth of articles and overclocking specific forums on the internet. After you've done that, have a basic understanding of what is going on, come back here if you have a specific question and I'll try to help you out. "What are some of the main risks I should take into consideration" isn't really demonstrating you've done your homework, and we're not here to do it for you.

You're underclocking your RAM because you probably can't overclock the FSB that high. Or you're overclocking your RAM because the multiplier you choose won't sit exactly at the RAM's specs. You'll have to see what you can do with the hardware. For an experienced builder, this shouldn't be confusing for you as RAM speeds has always been linked to the FSB speed. The overclock you're aiming for is possible but there's also a random chance that the hardware you get will not overclock that high.

We've already laid out some guidelines and suggestions for voltages. Don't expect a magical voltage for a particular overclock. Every system will behave differently due to differences in hardware, production batches, ambient temperature, etc. Don't raise the CPU voltage above 1.45V and you should be safe. Raise it as high as necessary to stay stable.

Why did he get banned? For this thread? If so that seems a bit much.

Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

Given that these core duo PC's are pretty powerful, is there actually a need to o/c them currently, or is it just about doing it because it's possible?

Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

I overclocked mine and it made a ArmaA run much nicer. If you want to run these latest games on high you need blazing processor speeds. It will be interesting to see game performance when they start utilizing both cores.
