Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

This thread has some great information regarding the new core2duo processors and overclocking in general. I now know who I'm going to pester when it comes time for me to order and build a new PC

This thread was painful to read. I did find this funny though: Look at his profile under Occupation: It says "Tech Support" .

Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

The kid may have had a legitimate question when he started this thread, but his approach was obviously all wrong. People here were generally trying to convey the same message that each machine is extremely unique based on memory, processor, MB, power supply, cooling, etc. No machines are alike unless you buy a stock machine like a DELL, but of that is the system you get you are not an enthusiast anyway. Anybody can build a working machine, but it is what you do with it afterwards that a tell tale sign of your passion for over clocking. There is some science to over clocking, but it is more of an art form that people have used over the years to really see what they can get out of their machines. There is no golden rule that say what you should ever set your FSB frequencies, multipliers or voltages to. Plus if he was really interested in making it faster, he would have included thing like his memory and GPU, those things would have been his bottleneck, not his processor.

It used to be a thing people did to stretch their dollar, but that is really not the case anymore from what I can tell. Most people like myself, do countless hours of experimenting, throwing allot of money at it mind you, to see what can be accomplished once certain barriers are overcome. Over clocking specific motherboards and memory are usually allot more expensive, sometimes double of what most mainstream boards are. Stability and heat are two things that are an ultimate goal of overcoming when trying to make a machine faster. I could easily afford a faster rig, but there is no thrill in it.

I want to personally see if I can reach the ultimate goal of doubling the manufacturer produced speed (CPU and GPU), I will get it one day. With the introduction of things like fan less motherboards, ultra thin processors, and cooling systems like the Phaze Change and other thermo electric cooling systems I might be able to accomplish that.

Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

I just ordered a Core 2 Duo E6400 due to what I have understood, to be it's vast ability to be overclocked. Rather then spend the extra cash for an E6600 i went the cheaper route hoping to stretch the dollar. If i am unable to overlcock it it's alright since the E6400 is a capable processor in itself.
Now, I have done some research but more must be done still having a hard time figuring out how timings and all that works out been reading up on it everyday. Now, i have come to understand that ram is very closely tied to a systems FSB. My ram is of low quality this I know but I have ran out of money and can't afford new ram so i'm stuck with DDR2 3200 (which is actually slower than standard DDR chips). Will this limit my ability to overclock. I know i need new ram it's just a matter of time and money. Thanks.

Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

You'll definitely need to new RAM even if you don't want to overclock. DDR2 3200 runs at 400Mhz. Since the stock FSB for Core 2 is 266Mhz there's a bit of a problem for the memory. The memory tends to run at 2x the FSB speed for Core 2 and 2x266Mhz is over 400Mhz. You probably have to run the RAM with a 1.5x multiplier (my board doesn't even have that). The past several generations of Intel CPUs have done well with faster RAM so a RAM upgrade should be first on the list.

Re: HEY need some help about OCin the Core 2 duo

Yea, you want RAM that runs at a speed that can be multiplied correctly into your FSB by your BIOS.

I'm running 800mhz RAM myself, when I OC'ed I just left the multiplier alone, pushing each stick to 450mhz. Eh, it's some good G.SKill stuff with heatsinks. I'm not worried.

That is exactly what I am running too and I have not noticed any problems. If you overclock more are you going to have to change the multiplier?
