Thumbs up Windows Vista & WPF. Impressive new browser applications

I think nothing shows off the power of Vista and WPF (Windows Presentation Foundation) better than this browser application (requires either Vista or XP with the latest .NET 3.0 installed).

Quote:
The British Library has digitized the pages of fifteen of their most valuable works and created Turning the Pages, a browser-based WPF application that allows you to interact with these books in a virtual environment from the comfort of your home. You can open a book on your desktop and by clicking on a page, physically turn it in a 3D environment. You can zoom or pan around each of the pages; the page turns themselves are created by modeling the actually deformation of different types of material (for example, a book with vellum pages is far heavier than something printed on paper, so you'll actually see the page start to collapse under its own weight). For certain books, such as the Sherborne Missal, a 15th Century prayer book that is considered by many to be the most magnificent English book from the Middle Ages to have survived the Reformation, you'll see that the gold leaf catches the light as you move the book around. Another really cool aspect of this application is that this project has reunited two of Leonardo Da Vinci's notebooks digitally: you can compare the Codex Leicester (owned by Bill Gates) and the Codex Arundel (part of the British Library's collection) side-by-side.
Very impressive stuff.

Just a note, WPF is not just for Vista its available for XP.

WPF is part of .Net 3.0. Its a new way to design GUI applications. It allows for animations and other nice visual enhancements.

A couple of new applications using WPF are the new Yahoo Messenger(http://messenger.yahoo.com/windowsvista.php) and the New York Times browser(http://firstlook.nytimes.com/index.php?cat=4)

That book application is very cool. Just a note. You need to open it up in IE. I was in Firefox and it kept asking me to save the file.

Very cool. Once I got the .net 3.0 installed it ran great. Reading those was much easier to me than the usual e-books. The text in this was softer on the eyes. Great use of technology if I do say so myself. XP ran it fine, but I'm guessing that Vista does it more seamlessly.

Thus the, "or XP with the latest .NET 3.0 installed" part of my sentence?

The difference between this app and an ebook is that in this app you are looking at a digitized images of the original book. An ebook is nothing more than copying and pasting text in ebook format.

The one thing I would like to see is to be able to get more details when zooming in rather than expanding the initial detail.

Re: Windows Vista & WPF. Impressive new browser applications

Another great WPF application can be found here. It's a 3D online catalog of Otto's products. The Otto Group are a huge retail conglomerate with €9b of revenues in 2005/6; they own retail outlets like Crate and Barrel in the US as well as catalog companies like Grattan and Freemans in the UK.

The website is in German, but if you click on the install link it should be pretty self explanitory. More background info, including comments from the lead sofware designer, can be found here.

All of your Vista info is great and it makes me want to get it. You don't work for microsoft do you and make comission off of selling Vista.

Re: Windows Vista & WPF. Impressive new browser applications

LOL. No to both. I'm just a natural evangelist for things I find cool. And, Vista isn't required for any of the WPF apps listed here.

...but if you feel the need to reimburse me I'm sure I can set up a PayPal account...
