Re: New video card problems

I have an Antec True Power II, 450W PSU. Love it!

I'd go with at least a 500W PSU from a reputable manufacturer (like antec or ultra), even though amperage is more of a critical factor. But here's WHY at least 500W.

Wattage is determined by a simple formula: Power (Watts) = I (Amps) * V (Volts). Your voltages are essentially fixed, but how much current is PULLED is not. With a larger power PSU, you are able to pull more current (up to that rail's limit), and thus sufficiently power more devices that require stable power.

Some of the more advanced GPU cards these days are now coming with a power requirement of having at least a 500W PSU, as well.

If you're going to be upgrading in a year ANYWAY, go on and start the upgrade NOW with the PSU that you'll want to power your new rig when you build it next year.

Re: New video card problems

Okay I was thinking of getting this one:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817103937

But my mobo looks like its only a 20pin, and looking at the picture of the plugin on this one it says (20+4 pin) and it has 24 pins, so I'm assuming this wouldn't work on my particular motherboard?

Are there any other good 20pin ones I could use?

Re: New video card problems

I think the +4 pin may be a seperate connector for 24 pin mobos. The pins are connected by the same wires, but it's split at the end so if you're mobo's only 20 pin, the remaining 4 just kinda sit there not being used. I'm not positive though.

Re: New video card problems

Well I was going to get that one, but I was getting second thoughts reading all the reviews of it quitting after 6mo. So I just ordered this one, pretty impressed by the reviews\specs:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817101021

Now lets just hope it fits in my mid tower case. Kind of disappointed that this $189 expenditure turned into around a $250 ordeal *sigh, oh well.

Re: New video card problems

Honestly, I've never heard of a Antec PSU failing within the 1st year. And since they are manufactured by SeaSonic, they are of the highest quality in the industry. And if you have an Antec fail on you, just RMA it, Antec will be happy to replace it within the 3 year limited warranty.

As for the second PSU you have there...never heard of the brand in the years I've been building and modding systems. I wouldn't trust $55 to ePower. I'd rather trust my money to a name brand like Antec.

On a related note, most of the people reporting failing PSUs on name brands are ones who are first time or inexperienced overclockers. They usually burn out the circuit board on their PSUs when they put too much of a power draw on it. (which is related to the power output, ampage, and volts) Sometimes is also due to a power surge (you should always plug your PC into a surge protector if not a backup UPS with surge protection).

Edit: Whoopsies...see you already ordered it... Well I hope you don't run into problems with that PSU mate. If you run into any more problems, just post back here. There's enough of us here reading this section to drop some advice

Re: New video card problems

As far as it fitting your case, it will. Mid-towers are built to hold mobos and PSUs conforming to the ATX form factor. Your psu will do fine.

As far as brand choice, Acreo is dead on. I'm not sure at ALL of ePower's reputation, so I wouldn't trust them until I know they've proven themselves. Antec, however, I trust. I've had my rig a little over a year and a half and my PSU is working out just fine, and its an Antec.

Re: New video card problems

Another thing I'll mention is Ultra offers a Lifetime warranty on their power supplies if you register with them.

Re: New video card problems

Okay, I just got my new power supply all installed and it works great with my existing setup. Now when I plug in my new video card, it does all the same crap it did before...

So its not a power problem, what else could it be? Am I not getting enough voltage to my AGP slot? Do any of you have an ideas??

Re: New video card problems

I built my pc last march and had the same issue with a Radeon X550. It wouldn't post no matter what I did. I happeend to try booting it with out my monitor plugged in, and it worked. Some how my monitor and my vid card were not compatible. Borrowed my mothers, and it fired right up. Had to trade her my nice 21 incher for a 17 :/ but the pc works.

I had sent the pc to a friend who knows a whole lot more than I do before I figured this out. He had never heard of an issue like this, but I had it happen.

Unplug the monitor and see if it posts, if it does then you may be having the same thing .

Re: New video card problems

Sry I missed this thread before.. I would have told you to stear way clear of ePower PSU :/ , I have never had one, yet an old friend bought one with his new video card years ago. After less then two months it was shutting down, then fried the whole computer. Very bad news.

Although Antec is on the list of better PSUs on the market, they are known to run lower specs than what is claimed they put out.

I personally will never go anything other than FSP(Fortron) ever again. My current one is soooo quiet, My video card is louder.
I had bought a generic from a local computer store years ago that slowly went belly up, unfortunately it took out my video card first.

There used to be sig, I cant find now, that went something like.
$100 gaming case
$200 RAM
$300 CPU
$400 video card
$50 PSU frying the whole thing.. priceless

dont do it .. the psu is the most important component in your case.
