Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

600 MB?!?! Holy moly cow! Eeek, I'll have to get my 4 GBs of RAM from the get go then. Is there a option in Vista to turn off the page file like there is in XP?

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

I am with the Snail here. Running XP on one harddisk and Vista on the other. Missing drivers for Ergodex DX1 and Creative Audigy 2. nvidia drivers still suck (what else is new?)
Middle of the year everything will work.

You can save some money by purchasing the System Builder Edition (read: OEM version) but I haven't read the new license for it to know what the limitations on installation are. I'm not sure if there are Ed. versions of Ultimate yet.

What extras does Ultimate offer beyond the "improved networking" and "Bit Locker Encryption"?

I've also read several user reviews, and many who have bought Ultimate say that it is a resource hog. How much physical RAM does it after startup? I know for XP for me, it eats around 300 MBs after loading up.
Yeah, =Sarc= has the right comments. Ultimate will hog resources if you let it because of the extra eye-candy available, but likewise, Vista, regardless of the edition will allocate RAM as needed for resources for applications - just make sure you have a lot of it- Vista will use it. Personally I don't mind Vista 'hogging resources' as long as it allocates properly to the gaming or other task that I need it to when I want to it - and so far it seems quite effective.

The Microsoft website has a lot of good comparison information and a tool to help evaluate which version is best for you and your system. Get the version appropriate to what you do - to me, Ultimate just seems like XP with a 'Plus pack', if you remember those.

Someone might want to check me on this but I also believe that Ultimate is the only edition that ships with both the 32 and 64 bit editions in the box (but NOT System Builder Edition). The other versions require ordering the 64-bit media from Microsoft for $9.95. I got my 64-bit DVD from Microsoft in three days.

That's nothing to freak out about. Why have so much RAM if it's not being used? Vista is using it. When an application needs it, it gives the app the RAM. The OS as a whole feels much faster because RAM isn't sitting there unused. If you get 4GB of RAM, Vista will end up using 2GB while idle. I've seen 1GB users have 512MB used after an extended period.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

I'm running Ultimate 64-bit:

Big problem is weak driver support, although that'll hopefully be resolved in a few weeks. I'm running a few beta drivers right now. If you're running the 64-bit version, it requires that all drivers are signed. So, a lot of small 3rd party drivers (like TrackIR's) don't work because they haven't released signed drivers yet. I haven't spent time looking into workarounds.

It's a bit confusing at first, trying to figure out where everything is; they moved a lot of settings and configurations around, but I've been using it for about a day now and it's getting comfortable. Very pretty. I would kill for the ability to make an entire window partially transparent, not just the borders.

It's not the resource hog people are making it out to be.

Take that 600MB with a grain of salt. Vista has a new caching mechanism called SuperFetch which learns your useage of application habits. As it learns what you typically run it will move the entire app into the SuperFetch cache in memory. That means when you run an app that exists in SuperFetch it will run from memory and not the HD. Obviously this gives you huge load speed bonuses.

Anyway, the upshot of all this is that it is difficult to say just how much memory the OS is using at any particular time because it will dynamically allocate/deallocate memory for the SuperFetch.

I wish this misinformation would stop floating around. 64bit Vista does not require all drivers to be signed. You can turn it off when running as administrator by issuing the following command and rebooting:

Bcdedit.exe /set nointegritychecks ON

If you wish to disable driver signing only for the current session, press F8 on boot.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

As for the original intent of this thread, I am running Vista Ultimate 32 bit. I still have XP on a different drive which I can boot to by changing the boot order of the HDs in bios. I'm currently keeping XP because nVidia's drivers are pretty crappy right now. I love the OS, but am not willing to take any performance hit in games, not to mention lack of EAX support from Creative for Audigy sound cards...

What eye-candy are you talking about and where are you getting this information? If you are talking specifically about the Aero interface, that is also available on Vista Premium. And, of course, the Aero interface can be turned off it you wish.

Are there some other resource problems with Ultimate that I am unaware of?

Additional animated backgrounds and features that can be turned on and/or downloaded. Microsoft.

Probably, probably not.

And resource 'hog' is probably to harsh a description as the OS merely maximizes utilization of available resources.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

Oh wow. Hmm...don't think I'm sold on getting Ultimate.

And with the 4 gigs of RAM, I'm trying to future proof to the next 4 years or so. Plus I tend to multitask heavily with multimedia, graphics, and compiler programs. On a busy day with XP, I eat what amounts to 2.5 GBs of physical ram. But I'll buy 2 gigs for my new system, then upgrade to another 2 when I need it.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

Jep, are you able to alt-tab out of 2142? In Vista only, or XP as well?

That'd be reason enough for me to buy it.
