Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

I went in msconfig but i didnt see it in the start up items. I dont even know where to go in the control panel to disable it. Arg! Any ideas?

Are you using the 97.46 (7000 series) or the 100.59 (8800 series) drivers? I have a 7800GTX and the 100.59 work much better then the 97.46s.

Is the precaching done with hard drive space or physical ram? And have you had any crashes that could be related to the precaching?

Also the Aero interface, when you switch/cycle through the windows, do they actually "flip" around?
The precaching is done with physical ram. Vista actually runs algorithms to determine which programs you use the most, and AT WHAT TIMES OF THE DAY you are most likely to use them - then, it will load the common files and procedures that the program will use into RAM before you are guessed to need it.

This makes things appear to open much faster than they used to. For it to work properly, the OS actually has to 'learn' your usage habits for awhile first.

Another side effect is if you want to really take advantage of this feature, you want the most RAM possible. Unlike XP, Vista doesn't try to conserve RAM, it tries to keep it completely full at all times, swapping things in and out as needed, but having your common programs always loaded. They say 4 GB is now the sweet spot for power users, whereas 2GB is good enough for users that aren't heavily multi tasking.

I am not interesting in flaming or arguing, however....

I agree, but considering Acreo was asking for information specifically to evaluate whether he will install Vista or not any causal statement such as that is bound to have more weight than usual.

That is a correct statement. If a user chooses to install Aero, BitLocker, DreamScene, automated backup, play Hold'em poker, and whatever other additional software available to them as Ultimate owners, then, yeah, it will use more resources. It does not "inherently" use more resources, however, as all these things are optional. Inherent means "built-in: existing as an essential constituent or characteristic".

Yes, that is correct. It is not a true statement. You said the OS uses more resources. It does not. Installing additional software in the OS does.

This type of optional software update has never been available before on XP, thus the analogy. What the analogy draws a focus on is that the software is optional.

I too an enamored with it. In fact, I just bought another 2GB of memory to allow SuperFetch to do more fetching ! Tom's Hardware has a good writeup on the SuperFetch technology if you are interested.

I've never used Enterprise E computers, but I have worked with quite a bit of voice recognition both personally and on a few projects as a consultant. Vista's implementation is hands-down the best I've seen. You can give voice commands to do anything you want on your computer.

It uses RAM, which is why it is so fast. I have not noticed any crashes related to SuperFetch and can't think of any scenario short of bad memory chips which would cause any problems. Think of SuperFetch like a RAM drive that the OS dynamically allocates.

Yep! Not only do they cycle around, but the windows themselves are "live". If you have a video running, you can see the video still running while you are flipping. You can see a 1 minute ms demo of Flip3D and other parts of Vista here or a user-created video here.

Go to control panel, search for "speech". Click on "Speech recognition options" and then "Advanced speech options."

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

Do you tell the preloader which programs to keep ready? Or does it analyze this itself? Or something else entirely?

Jep has a good description of it..it analyzes your usage patterns to determine what to keep in RAM, when to put it there, etc. The more you use your computer, the more it learns what you like and the more accurate SuperFetch becomes.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

Sounds cool. Now, what is the difference between Ultimate and Hom Premium? I've read the back of the box, and it seems mostly related to file storage and security... neither of which I'm too keen on.

I mentioned previously an easy-to-use comparison can be found here.

Home Premium does not have: Built in backup/restore software, Networking center, Remote desktop support, or Bitlockher driver encryption. Ultimate owners also will get additional free windows updates not available to other users, like Hold'em (a texas hold'em style card game), DreamScene, etc.

Ultimate owners also get additional perks...see attachment for complete description.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

Thank you for that summary, Twisted. Right now it looks like Premium has everything I'd ever need for a media/gaming rig, then?
