The first problem with my mic was that I didn't disable my onboard sound card. So XP would always expect the default microphone from the onboard and considered the X-fi as just Line-In. You can go onto the recording device menu and manually set which device is your default recorder. The only problem is that some Microsoft application such as the voice recognition needs to have the default as Microphone in order to work (so if you default Line-In as your recording device it can't tell that a microphone is plugged in).

Once I disabled my onboard soundcard Vista eventually relized that Line-In was the microphone port and uses that for a defualt. So if you havn't already, disable your onboard soundcard through BIOS. If you have then try setting each device in your "Recording device" menu to default and see wich one works.

I'm not sure if you've tried this or not.... when I was trying to get my mic working, I found the recording control panel to be quite counter-intuitive; to enable my mic as a recording source, I had to select it and hit 'Set Default.' It was previously set to Digital In or something. I don't know whether it's Vista, the creative drivers or just generic software incompatability that's responsible for that bit of weirdness...

I, too, didn't really understand how to navigate and change settings in the sound control. I never saw much wrong with the pre-Vista method other than the cumbersome way of switching between playback and recording sound level settings. Although, I'm getting used to the new method and it's a little bit better.

Guys, If you are having issues with your mic in BF2 and BF2142, also check mic boost in audio settings in the game.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

Something just crossed my mind. Can we disable Windows Vista's built in firewall? I ask because I've always had it disabled in XP and run ZA Pro in it's place (better protection). It just struck me as being counter-productive if the Vista firewall couldn't be disabled...

Actually in Vista I cannot turn on mic boost in 2142. It always turns off.

You can turn it off. Go to control panel, Security (if you have the Vista view, or windows firewall in classic view) then turn it off.

Re: Vista Owners, Raise Your Hands.

Zoopy T, Right click on the desktop icon go to compatibility and check "Run this program in compatibility mode for: Windows XP (Service Pack 2)". And also download the Creative Alchemy driver. And you should be able to check it now.
