Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
Here's a little update for those still wondering about this brand of headphones.
I've had headphones like you mentioned that would squish the headphone to the ear. These are surprisingly comfortable compared to their size. When I first got them out their box I first thought was they would feel pretty heavy after a few hours of wearing them. That really hasn't been the case for me personally. I find the ears don't feel as pressed as other sets I've owned. The outer ear for me rests somewhat on the donut shaped outer ring. But the bulk of the outer ring rests on the side of the head. As you can see by my niffy diagram

To begin with the main headphone ear pad is removable and has a flexible band around the edge, as you can see in the dimension pic its roughly 5/8" deep. Its made up of a somewhat egg shaped donut of padding and a thin layer of speaker cloth. See Pic.

Once you remove the main headphone earpad. There's a additional 1/8" thick piece of foam that's glued over the speaker cavity. Around it are three small screws that you can remove to allow you to lift up the main speaker mount.

According to Medusa there are four speakers per ear. 3 are mounted near the ear (1)(2)(3) and the fourth I assume the bass or Vib (4)mounted behind the other three. The main cord has also been crimped with a piece of metal to keep you from yanking the delicate speaker wires during normal use. See Below. Looking at it now that piece of metal may have been ment to go into a grove below it and then crimped. That would explain why I can push the cord up into the earpiece quite a bit.

Hopefully this will give people a little better idea how it will fit them.

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
Ok I have a question since a lot of people have these headphones. I have a Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music sound card. Now I have each plug connected into the back of the sound card into its respective spot. Yet when I open up the Creative software to test each of my channels I get no sound from the front left speaker.
Now, and this is what I have been doing lately, I've switched the green and black connectors and now I'll have no sound from my rear left channel. Does anybody know what's wrong with my headphones? I've tried this with 2 different x-fi cards with the same results.|TG-12th| jmaker

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
I had a similar problem in Vista... wasn't sure if it was just the Vista Creative drivers. I disabled CMSS and everything got back to normal.

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
You have a DVD you can use that has the THX optimizer? try that - it'll play white noise through all the channels, one at a time... that'll give you a stable test source anyway while you screw w/ the creative settings anyway.

Why are these banned from CAL/CPL? Just curious.

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
I recieved my Medusa 5.1 headphones yesterday and played some BF2142. I must say I am underwhelmed. Sure, you have directional sound, but the sound quality seemed quite poor. There seemed to be no bass in the front speakers, even with the vib volume turned all the way up and everything sounds tinny. A few people mentioned that there is a pass-though for regular speakers when you aren't using your headphones, but I don't see any. There isn't any master volume control. And, it came without a North American power plug.
Everyone seems to be raving about these, am I missing something?Twisted Firestarter

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
The pass through is only on the home edition. As far as everything else goes I am still tweaking the settings. My only complaint so far is when I speak into my mic my own voice comes throught the head phones. I feel like I am talking to my self. It is probably just a setting but I don't know which one.

It sounds like you have the recording source in Windows set to 'Stereo Mix' or something rather than 'Mic'.

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
You need to set your soundcard's bass redirect setting to "on" and set the cutoff frequency to the highest frequency allowable.
It's not the headset but the soundcard that is the problem. This is noted in the creative labs forums, where they directly say that for the medusas, the card's bass redirect has to be on.
Also make sure you have cmss turned off, else even with speakers at 5.1, any stereo signal will be routed to all speakers in some fashion (nice for stereo music for an immersive feel, but for surround sound games, some of the sounds come in as stereo, and even when they have the info as to where they are to be routed, cmss ignores that and reroutes the sound to all speakers). As for mic settings, do the same on your card settings like you would for any mic you plug into your mic port on your sound card.|TG-Irr|Hiram_Yorik

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
These links have some information regarding helping tinny sound and lack of bass among other things. Some of it Sir Brass has already mentioned.

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
Great info, thanks! Hrm...I was able to turn CMSS off, but I don't see any "bass redirect" option in Creative's Audio Console. I hope this isn't one of those things that is only available in original install CD; I haven't had that thing in years. I'll check Creative's site and see what software they have available to download.

Re: Review of Medusa 5.1 Headphones
Hrmm...well, I had a best buy gift card from xmas laying around so I grabbed an X-Fi today. Got everything installed, fixed the CMSS, fixed the bass redirect. It sounds fine now. However, when I use the Console Launcher to test the speakers (the one that has the voice saying "front left, front center, front right, etc) when I hear rear-left and rear-right I am only getting sound from the rear-left both times.
