Re: Rate my Newegg rig

Hmm, interesting. 1100mhz ram bus speed effective.

Well if you do get it, please make sure it has heatsinks on the ram. Ram at that speed will overheat fast.

As far as future proofing goes. A C2D should be quite effective for the next 3-5 years. Or any dual core for that matter. I don't see quad-core apps becoming popular so soon, so the dual cores are more than enough. If you really want to future proof, get a Seagate or Samsung HD. They both last a long time.

If you plan on gaming on that machine for the next 5 years, then I'd suggest saving up for video card upgrades every 1 1/2 years to keep up to the new breed of games coming out. For now, get a 7900GT or so, it'll hold you till the end of the year or until the 8800 drops in price a bit more. Also get at least 2 gigs of RAM. You'll need it. Hard drive space is up to you. If your a heavy downloader, then get a 200+ gig one. If you're not, then whatever suits your budget.

Re: Rate my Newegg rig

I agree with Acreo except I would suggest the 8800 GTS 320mb video card over the 7900. The cost is close to the same but the benchmarks I have seen show that the 8800 is far better.

Well, I was taking into account a build date within the month. If you're not building until say summer (may/june), then get the 8800GTS 320 or so. That card will definitely hold you till the end of '07 if not through '08 as well.

Re: Rate my Newegg rig

I'm having problems deciding if I want the 320mb or the 640mb myself of the 8800gts. Its really a 75$ difference on newegg, between evga 320mb 279-300$, and MSI's 375$ 640mb version.

More is better! May not need that memory at lower resolutions today, but tomorrow will doubtless require more.

Textures are the killer (this is what eats up you graphics card memory). If you're going to keep that card for a while, go with more memory.

If you want some bedtime reading, check this guy's thesis on the subject.
