Database program advice

I am trying to help a friend out. He needs to record addresses for a charity we work for, but since it is a charity we do not have allot of funds to get something like MS Office. We are looking for something along the lines of Excel/Access or whatever, where you can create a database of email addresses, names, telephone #’s, and postal address than sort and manipulate that info. As an added bonus, is there something out there that could not only do the database but also create address labels and mailing lists?

I really appreciate any ideas or advice.

OpenOffice.org has Base. And it has a word processor too. I would assume they work together.
It is open source and free.

Re: Database program advice

excel will work as a quasi database until you get too many rows... Access would be a better idea but that will require a bit of setup.

You are banned for 2 weeks for suggesting MS Access.

Ya, I hovered over the "Report Post" button for a little while before letting it go.

I think OO should cover it no problem.

Re: Database program advice

What you are looking for is a CRM application (Customer Relationship Management). I haven't used any free ones, or can't remember any, but a quick look on google turned up a few.

Re: Database program advice

Are any of the above tidbits in a web based program? I liked the google ones, but I would love to encourperate it into a .PHP style page, preferably in the form of a module or a block. I amy be asking too much for a freaware/opensource.

This would be my recommendation as well. You could also consider StarOffice as well. Only $69.95 and made by Sun.

Re: Database program advice

Just saw this contact manager which is built on top of the 37Signals software which I have used. Decent stuff. Don't expect any bells and whistles though.
