For a kickarse system under $1000 you should use the new (and final version) AMD 64 x2 socket am2 6000+. They perform on par with the e6700 and are HUNDREDS less. Not to mention the mobos that support them are generally cheaper. AMD has really dropped the bottom out of their CPU pricing to compete with Intel. I myself almost went for it as I'd basically not have to worry about overclocking etc and would save money on expensive cooling, etc.
The upgrade path would be the newer quad cores (later this year I think) that will plug into the same socket (make sure the mobo supports it).
