Re: HDTV, what should I be looking for?

Well going back to the 100 inch tv, if you want fun that big or bigger than its worth getting a HD projector to be fair. I actually read in reviews though that LCD's have a much better picture quality than plasmas, evident in the new Bravia range, which are awesome!

It really depends on what you're using it for. Plasma's generally have much better PQ (color accuracy, black levels, and no motion blurring)... it's really their only advantage. However, if you intend to use it as a PC monitor at all, or if you ever go on console gaming marathons (an 8hr session e.g.), then LCD is probably better.

Keep in mind what I am describing is not the format mask that a 16:9 set puts on when showing a 4:3 picture.

It depends on their in-house distribution. It could be a couple of things.

- Their distribution may not send the signal for the TV to revert to 4:3 it's hard to say without knowing the nature of the signal being distributed. Most of the new TV's can auto adjust their format if the 4:3 is in Analog or Digital.. I'm pretty sure Analog fixes itself too.. it's been so long since I've looked at an analog station.

- If it is an HD channel broadcasting local content, the local content may get the black bars on the side - like it's not quite 16:9 but also not 4:3. I am pretty sure this goes back to the content provider (Comcast, BrightHouse, etc..) and how they handle the signal from your local broadcast. For example, our local fox13 news has black bars on the sides when the content is local (local news and programming) but goes to full 16:9 when the content comes from the national HD provider. BUT the same channel viewed on Comcast, does not have that issue.

It's really annoying to me (it's getting on my nerves more and more because I am certain that between the local broadcast and BrightHouse they can fix this) when watching a national broadcast, like 'House', the picture is perfect 16:9 and sound is balanced. When it kicks over to local broadcast for advertising or whatever the video truncates and the volume increases.

The adjustments that Waffle mentions are helpful but hopefully BrightHouse (in my case) will get it sorted out soon.. although they aren't very good at this stuff in my area.

My bulb was supposed to last 10000 hours, but now I'm involved with a class action. I'm on my second TV and second $350 bulb. What a freaking hassle.

Maybe they have improved the quality of the bulbs, but the repair guys I have been talking to say these lamps burn out all the time, my TV just happened to be the worst of the bunch.

So good luck with the LCD. I'm buying a plasma next time.

Re: HDTV, what should I be looking for?

Well, my receiver crapped the bed Friday night. It started turning off and on all by itself. I've had it for almost 15 years, and I'm going to ask Onkyo if they'll take a look at it for free.

So, I'm looking at getting an Onkyo TX-SR805. But if I do that, I'll need to upgrade from my tiny 27" CRT. (Can't have all those HDMI inputs without anything plugged into them!)

So, since I'm really nearsighted (I can't read the onscreen guide for the cable programming without getting up off the couch and standing about 6 feet from the TV), I really think that I want to get the biggest TV that I can afford.

With that in mind, isn't a DLP TV the best bang for the buck?

In all honesty you should check out this link:

http://www.vizio.com/products/detail.aspx?pid=30

hands down the best bang for your buck. The picture on thes emachines are great. Costco had a blueray dvd playing on a 42 inch LCD and the quality was amazing.

edit: enjoy your new TV!!! I'll leave the original post up incase anyone is curious.

Re: HDTV, what should I be looking for?

Just noticed this thread - I've been using a CRT (yep, old school) 32" Phillips HDTV for almost two years now, and I must admit it's better than anything in terms of picture quality - both in 4:3 analog and HDTV. Also, the built-in sound is fantastic because it has a beefy case, so it has 6 speakers in there - 4 up front and two in the back/top.

Really the only drawbacks to CRT are that 32" is the maximum size and the tube is pretty heavy (~150lbs) and deep (in terms of depth). I just never hear about CRT anymore, but it's still in play, is HDTV compatible, cheap, and best of all, it is a perfected technology - it lasts a long, long time.

Yeah, Cing, if you want something in the 60-75" range, DLP (or maybe LCOS, which is closely related) is going to be the only way to go without dropping ~10k+. As opposed to the 2-4k for DLP.

Re: HDTV, what should I be looking for?

Speaking of CRT HDTVs, anyone remember those 50-inch projection screen HDTVs so many years ago? I still remember the HDTV tech demo in Best Buy. The thing cost nearly $8000 and it was huge!

42" - 50" is the mainstream norm this year it seems for HDTV sets (Plasma and LCD). So getting one within that range should give you some edge performance over the rest of us HD owners.

Cingy, I was in Best Buy about a week ago and I saw they had a 62" LCD HDTV for about $6000. Is that be big enough for you?
