Is that consistent? Windows ping only sends 4 tries by default, and the occasional packet loss happens on the best of connections. I use "ping -t" (continuous mode) to see how good the connection is over time. Just control-C after awhile to stop pinging.

But I think AA is right. That big spike in delay at hop 8 is normal for a cross-continent jump, but not for a hop across a region as small as Korea. (I didn't think anything of it as I'm in California and many of the servers I use are half a continent away. Plus, my ISP right now is broken because nearby bridge reconstruction (San Francisco, where a new bridge is going up) has made them use less-than-optimal routing.)

Re: Slow website?

Let me do some extra digging for that trace program. Then we can see if where the packet loss actually happens and if there is more than one place where packets drop.

Re: Slow website?

I've used this one:

http://visualroute.visualware.com/

Here's another:

http://www.pingplotter.com/

If you have Linux, you can use mtr (Matt's traceroute). It must run as root, and runs in a console window. It provides a nice curses-based display that refreshes regularly and pings all the routers along the path in parallel.

Re: Slow website?

Ah there we are, Ping Plotter. Download the trial or whatever, install it. Run it and ping the website. On the right side it will graphically show you ping and hops (trace route) along with packet loss for each route.

Re: Slow website?

Well I did a backtrace from my home system to 61.34.56.1. I average at 251 latency (ping time). Large latency jump at hop 13 from 94 to 249. The IP at hop 13 orginates within Korea (203.255.234.185).

Hmm, using Ping Plotter, trace another to another website (one where you don't experience this slowness) and then post a screenie of the trace.

I want to see if there is another large hike in latency. If you do or don't see one, I'd still talk to your ISP about the slowness. See if there is anything they can do to give you more consitent ping within the country.

Other than that, I'm not sure how else to help you. To me the problem is apparently within the confines of the Korean network. I wouldn't expect your ping to hike until it starts leaving the country (at hop 11).

Re: Slow website?

Ping jump is within Korea, the ISP is KRNIC. Unfortunately, the only thing you can do is speak with your ISP. The high ping from the single to triple digits is out of your control. I can only guess that there is high load on the KRNIC ISP network, which also affects your packet flow.

Re: Slow website?

But Yahoo loads fast and TG loads slow?

Is there a way to see packet loss percentage instead of ping time? (mtr does that in the default display.)

I don't think the round trip time is the factor. It's not that different between the two sites.

Another possibility is that the "popular" sites are being served from local caches, such as Akamai.

Re: Slow website?

Packet loss is there in the screen shots. None to speak of...

Dirtboy, you haven't installed any GreaseMonkey scripts, have you? Those will significantly slow down the loading of pages. The New Posts Filter particularly.

Re: Slow website?

Do you have a little brown monkey face in the bottom right hand corner of your Firefox window? If you do, try right clicking on it and click on the "Enabled" item with the check next to it to disable greasemonkey.

If he doesn't know what it is, I doubt he installed it.
