Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
D-Link is run by 5 graders, I shouldn't say that because I'm insulting the 5th graders. Linksys also is scripted, but they are also trained well. Most common problems they can fix without reading the book. And if they have to, they are versed well enough to know what they are talking about. If you get a linksys newbie on the phone, call back and you should get a better person on the phone.
Linksys makes a network add-on that priotizes the gaming steam of the bandwidth. I forget what it's called but CompUSA carried it. I haven't researched it but I bet it works. Also there are some nice 3rd party firmware upgrades from the WRT54G model that really work.

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
Yah, well you should have heard my friend's conversation with a Belkin woman. My god it was hilarious. Just to see how good (if at all) she was as a tech person, he did the same as me, no Ethernet card which was coming later the same day from newegg. She didnt get it right, and we spent an hour listening to her not figure it out. Anyway, just my $.02

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
Get the WRT-54GL and install DD-WRT (or Open-WRT if you have linux experience), it is very much better than the standard firmware. OpenWRT is more flexible, but more "fiddling under the hood" is required.

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
I have a DGL-4300 and I must say it is the nicest router I have had. It has a nice interface with plenty of options. The one biggest issue I have with it is that any major change you do requires the device to reboot. I don't understand why, it is very annoying though.
The QoS (or "gamefuel" as they call it) works preaty good if set up correctly. Although games like 2142 which have a crap load of ports is very time consuming. Wireless is great on it, reaches from the basement up to my top floor (roughly three floors). with good strength and no drops. My old DL-524 cut out all the time which is the reason I replaced it. If the DGL-4300 is on sale (less then $100CDN) then I would get it. $130CDN is quite pricey (I'm to lazy to look at USD). |

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
Well, I ended up getting the WRT54GL based on recommendations from the above posters and after some thorough research on the "popularity" of that particular model and alternate firmware.
As for the Linksys "add-on" packet prioritizer, I have it. I bought it a while back, and I can tell you from experience, it does not work. I never noticed or saw any drop in lag or ping while playing any game online. Although it has helped make VoiP calls a little smoother when others on the network are downloading. It just doesn't work for games. And I have called Linksys to ask about what games it supports and they have told me that they don't know.

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
Games and VOIP both predominantly use UDP while web, mail and P2P use TCP. The packet prioritizer likely lets UDP packets "cut the line" and go out before any queued TCP packets.

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
I thought I'd just update everyone. I got the WRT54GL today setup and running just fine. I also got the computer in the back room hooked up wirelessly with a 92% signal strength. Thanks to everyone to gave me feedback, suggestions, tips, and support!

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
Just updating everyone again. I've rehooked that Linksys packet prioritizer back onto my network (between my modem and router) and it absolutely no effect on ping. I'm beginning to think it only works on console games and not on PC games.
Hmm, looks interesting. What's the price tag on that thing? And have you found any reviews on the Ruckus?

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
Is it supposed to work even if your network isn't saturated? If your game's ping is already as fast as it can be, prioritizing isn't going to help anything!

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
@Cingular, my network is almost constantly saturated with bit-torrent downloads and youtube videos. That's when I usually test my gaming ping and that darn linksys game thingy doesn't help one bit. Complete waste of $40.
@ednos, err yea...DD-WRT. I have not messed with it since I do not want to brick my router if end up rushing the install process.

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
From what I hear, it's nearly impossible to brick your router, despite all the warnings. However, since I want to be in no way legally responsible for any of this, let me warn you that you might brick your router, even if all you did was look at it funny, or press Down+B in Super Smash Brothers.

Re: Which Wireless Router Should I Purchase?
Why? That's all I'll ever buy.
