Re: Vista, Sound Card, Drivers, and My Rig
I don't see what the relevance of the prices of those components today. You stated that you weren't going to build this thing until summer of 2008. That's a long time from now. Indeed, I think that you won't be looking at any of the main components that you listed here by then.
For instance, you probably wouldn't want to buy a DDR2 board and memory then. If history tells us anything about Nvidia, they'll release a, by then, mid-range 8900 series card which will be a better buy than the 8800GTS. And, it's likely that there will be a better more cost efficient cpu than the E6420. I'd take a E6550 over that one today for just $15 more. But in 11 months, the CPU scene will be quite different than it is now. Seems just a bit strange to me to be thinking about specific components like these a year in advance.

Re: Vista, Sound Card, Drivers, and My Rig
In the lower price ranges AMD still comes out on top, although not by much currently (in the face of Intel's recent price cuts). In the Quad core game, Intel takes the cake.

Re: Vista, Sound Card, Drivers, and My Rig
Sordavie,
I usually look at parts and start to finalize a prelist well in advance of the actual build purchase. It gives me a choice between the current build and perhaps a price-comparable build in the future. Then it just comes down to what I can afford on my set budget. In addition with this build, I'll know of most of the issues I might encounter along the way and possible solutions to them. No one has yet given me any feedback as ease of updating the BIOS on eVGA boards. I'm still hoping someone has dealt with them. ![]()
