Obviously I tone it down a tad so that I get a constant framerate however it is nice to max everything out if you have the hardware to do so .

Re: GPU overclocking

Quick question.

I used rivatuner to bump my GPU fan to 100% at startup. Is there some downside to this (other then more noise). It was set to 60% by default.

I'm wondering because I now run the 8800 gts ocd at 647/950 (500/800 stock). the temps go from:
60C idle / 80C-81C max load @ 60% fan speed
to
55C idle / 70C-73C max load @ 100% fan speed

That is a pretty good decrease by just running the fan at its full potential. There is a slight increase in fan noise but it is negligible. Is it a bad idea to run in at 100%?

Re: GPU overclocking

You'll wear out the fan faster and it'll be noisier. It's not really a big deal if you can live with the noise.
