Re: Time for vista upgrade?

I actually really like Vista. It took a little bit more fiddling around to get it working properly than I have had to do with XP but since then, it has been rock solid stable. My only real gripe with it now is the way Battlefield 2 runs on it and the fact that I have to dual boot XP in order for that game to be playable.

I think the problem lies on my machine somewhere. More specifically, I don't think my 2GB of PC3200 DDR is adequate to run BF2 and Vista Home Premium x64 at the same time. Everything else runs fine, I just have problems with BF2.

Again, others don't have this problem. It is really probably just user error.

Re: Time for vista upgrade?

Found my answer...I'd post the link, but I don't have enough posts yet lol

I liked this bit particularly...stated by a Microsoft forum moderator

Yes, if you build the computer, you are seen as the 'Manufacturer'. The Licensing agreement says that "The replacement motherboard must be the same make/model or the same manufacturer’s replacement/equivalent, as defined by that manufacturer’s warranty." Since you are the 'Manufacturer' you can define your manufacturer’s warranty any way you wish in regards to 'manufacturer’s replacement/equivalent' motherboard.

Also, Carey is correct, you will need to Activate by Phone and talk to a Live Activation Rep.

So I can simply say that my warranty includes me replacing every part. I just have to call an activation rep, and as long as I'm not running one activation key on more than one CPU they will let me rebuild/reformat/whatever with my OEM copy...

Hope this is true

Re: Time for vista upgrade?

when installing vista, do you need a mobo that says 'vista' in the description?
i am on the edge of building my new system, and there are some mobos that are called the 'vista edition' or something similar to that
also, is there a set date to sp1 comming out for vista?

Nope. The Vista mobos are marketing ploys to get you to think you need that mobo to run Vista OS.

I don't know when SP1 is coming out but it should be in a few months I think. It's still quite fine to use now though.

Re: Time for vista upgrade?

Microsoft released the Vista SP1 RC last week It should be out for public download this week if not already. The final SP1 should be out early in the new year.

Re: Time for vista upgrade?

I have been using Vista in one form or another since June of last year (Release Candidate 1 and 2) and I officially converted my platform over to Vista only in Feb.

I havent had any major issues at all with vista other than my mic is always on which is kinda weird but not worth trying to fix for me yet. But Vista does take a while to set up properly (by properly I mean the way i want with out all the useless crap Vista turns on by default like UAC, Tablet PC Interface etc)

If you have a DX10 compliant card then yes you should upgrade to Vista. If you dont then there really isnt any reason to upgrade yet.

once you get Vista installed I recomend going to www.blackviper.com and following BV's Vista Optimization guide.

Your mic is always on? As in it's not muted? You can turn that off by going to your playback device's properties and muting the mic channel in the levels tab.

Re: Time for vista upgrade?

I had heard a rumor from a friend and decided to scour the internet for results to see if there was any truth in what I heard. What I heard was BF3 was in development and planned release might be as early as fall of '08. That was true what I read on the internet on a couple different sites but also a few little tidbits were in as well I thought was interesting. Probably just a rumor still, I won't believe it till I read some kind of official announcement from a reliable source instead of some of these "unknown" sites.

This is supposed to be one thing I had read.
BF3 is planned to only support the 64 bit Vista or possibly 2 releases, one for 32 bit and 64 bit. One of the only games so far in development that is supposed to be designed with 64 bit OS's in mind but also expecting a 32 bit release for all the the computers that already are running the 32 bit Vista.

I too am wondering if it might not be worth buying the 64 bit Vista when I do a computer build within the next few months? I plan on buying 4Gb of RAM and I would want to take advantage of it instead of it just sitting there not getting put to it's full potential. Plus I want to be sure if BF3 does come out I will be able to play it, lol. I do not see them phasing out 32 bit operating systems for quite some time yet, maybe Microsoft's next OS will be solely 64 bit cause most people will by then have computers capable of running 64 bit OS's.
With what I read about BF3 on several different sites I still take with a grain of salt, it is to long away to really know if BF3 is actually in development and if it will have a option when buying to run 64 bit or 32 bit.

Re: Time for vista upgrade?

BF3 will support 32-bit Windows. The 64-bit OS user base is so small that it would cripple sales. Wait until you build your PC to decide the 64-bit route. There might be more information about BF3 and 64-bit. In the meantime, ask some users about gaming in 64-bit. I think some dual boot to get certain games working.
