Asus G1 Vs. Asus V1 Vs. Dell 1330?

Dropping a couple of dimes on a high end laptop that has to be a mobile office when needed and run databases etc as well as feed my need for gaming in hotels...

I am down, after much searching to Asus notebooks. I was about to go for the Dell XPS 1710 or the 12, but held off just in time to see these new Asus machines. I also checked out the HP dv9500. Any feedback on these machines if you have them would be very appreciated...

Since Dell will be switching over to Alienware to replace its XPS line, you could always configure a somewhat better gaming notebook through Alienware (confirmed "unofficially" by a Dell rep) for the $2000 you'd pay for the XPS 1710.

Looking at the tech specs for the HP dv9500t, I don't recommend if you want to do gaming. You'd be spending quite a bit bringing it up to par with the XPS or Alienware gaming notebooks.

The integrated Intel graphics on the ASUS G1S and the V1S are useless for gaming (unless you are playing older DX8 games and such). Unless you can upgrade both of those chipsets, you're better off going with Dell or Alienware.

Note: Dell = Alienware, Alienware = Dell.

I got an E1705 for $1200 after a few dell coupons. It has a Nvidia Go 7800 and I can BF2 at around 70FPS. Before you invest in a so called "Gaming" laptop, see if you can configure a 'regular' laptop with a higher end video card.

I'd also keep on the lookout for coupons.. here's a good site to keep an eye on: http://www.bensbargains.net ... maybe watch that for a week before you buy.

Get the best video card you can possibly afford. Check out the tiers for the laptop cards and make sure you get something near the top. Stuff like the 8400 won't really cut it for gaming. You can run the games but everything is at the lowest setting and barely pulling decent framerates.

The only other things to look out for is lots of RAM (you can probably get some great deals aftermarket, even better if the laptop is equipped with one DIMM so you don't have to throw out/sell a pair) and a fast harddrive. A faster harddrive and better video card will cut down on battery life but these are essential for gaming. You can already justify the RAM by the need to do database work.

That looks like as good as it can get. It's always pretty tough gaming on a laptop since the power isn't there to play the latest games. That setup should be decent enough to run most games. You might have to lower the resolution but I'm sure you can accept that since you're on the road and bored.

Thanks Sarc, I run BF2 PR, and that is about it. I save the rest of it for business programs/databases.

The V1 asus comes with nearly the same set up...the g1 is more gaming focused.

The HD upgrade to 7200RPM should help. I can run BF2 on my old laptop (AMD 64, 512MB RAM, 9600 Radeon mobility) and the main issue was load times. It would take about 5 minutes to load a map. I used to take bathroom and drink breaks and come back to a still loading map. It ran smooth though.

Hey Whiskey, thanks...just reread your post....I am of the same mindset...the Asus V1 is a 17in business laptop, that I can hook up the same way but the cost is about the same when you go for the high end processors....I will have to dig deeper....

Dell has a Mobile Gaming Laptop that has dual 8600GTS's, forgot the model number, but if you google it you shouldnt have an issue finding it. Thats the best gaming laptop as of right now...

Your selection is pretty darn good as well, wish i had that amount of cash for a gaming laptop.

Hi,thanks to all of you. I needed a laptop that is a little flashy as my business deals with physicians, the very techy type...so this will fit my bill, but also, I need to run my company, website, 2 databases, from it remotely while feeding my addiction to BF2 PR.

I finally did it and went with the Asus g2S-B1.

Vegache, the company www.gentechpc.com is very good. I almost always use Newegg, but this company was recommended by notebookreview.com, and they do allow for the customization!
