Currently the only benefit to being in an alliance (you can't really call communications a benefit since we do it better here) is the TGA tag that denotes you are a member of a large and powerful group. That's about it. That TGA tag makes people doing random pillages think twice/three times before sending off their military and also gives a nice safety net for them to withdraw when a TGA member with a military score in the 100,000+ range comes knocking on their door with an offer they can't refuse.
There really is no real benefit to forming a faction when its so much better, and easier, to have one very large guild with a well known name posted on the charts. If anything a faction would best be served as a gateway guild as AD accumulates more diplomacy points to invite more people.

Yes, there is communication being done on the forums... but not for us in the game. I used to come home to about 8 new diplomacy messages in my inbox everyday, but none of them were related to me or anyone else around me.
Sure, having the tag makes people back off, but we are isolated up here. They would know that, because all the islands around us have 0 colonies, and AD's main island is a day and half away. We have to fend for ourselves over here, and if you guys would send men up here, that would be around 3 days of double upkeep.
Also, it helps out TGA, since the newcomers are closer to you then they are to us. This means you can ask for resources, and receive faster. Also, AD is going to be getting less and less diplomacy points, maybe not due to resources but the time spent to upgrade the buildings. This especially helps with the new Action Point System (AP). Since it would cost you a action point for 3 days to get back your action point.
