Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

I'm wondering whether one of the most powerful weapons in TG's arsenal is in fact the threat of retaliation by the TGA, in contrast to direct retaliation.

I just say this because on alpha server many TG'ers are quite distant from direct TG help and with the action point system sometimes help can be some time away if forces are tied up elsewhere. Also, it's a lot cheaper to send threatening messages than to send troops!

If one of our own is attacked and you can't help, then send a threatening message telling them we will 'chain pillage' them for attacking a TG'er unless they withdraw their attack.

That and unless they're in a big bad alliance, tell them to check out the scoreboard and unless they want to go up against the #12 (and rising) alliance on the server, they better back off.

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

I had a guy threaten to have his alliance chain pillage me if I didn't contribute to the island assets on my main island (to which I had been contributing from day one). I replied that I'd been there longer than he had and that our island was collectively doing what we can. I also pointed out that I was sure his little #200 alliance didn't want an alliance war with the #20 (at the time) alliance on the server, so he'd better back off. I haven't heard a thing from him since. Often, all it takes is the threat.

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

There might actually come a time when such a strategy backfires and backfires badly however. We currently have 40 members and a grand total of 91,871 points. That's 2,297 points averaged per player. Alternatively MCS (#1 guild) has 277,404 points and only 38 players which averages 7,300 per player. Heck, the guild BELOW us Lost has 17 members 85,270 and averages 5,016 points per player. That means their players have over twice, if not more, the power in their cities as us.

In its current state TGA has quite a lot of 'fluff' and its the quantity of our players, not exactly our quality, that is bumping up our score. Sure you look at the ranking and see impressive numbers, but its a double edged sword because with so many members and such a low score it means that ubermilitant juggernaut is further away then you may think.

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

Tarenth makes valid points. There is some fluff to TGA. Though I'm surprised you didn't at least mention FTS who is 50 strong with an average score 4,820 and a total score of 241,011 and is ranked at 2nd. These guys are essentially our major competition on the boards. They have numbers and strength behind it. I imagine by the time we reach that area of the scoreboard, we won't be much different than they are.

But in the meantime...I say fake it til you make it. I have no problems threatening an alliance ranked lower than our own with the Wrath of God if it will get them to back off. Obviously nobody is going to bark threats to the bigger Alliances above us. That would be a bit counterproductive.

Oops.

*whistles quietly*

I better keep it a secret then....

...Hey, no one explicitly said not to mess with MCS......

We might have had some words....

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

Don't worry Rincewind, Im only 6 hours from you and can have an elite slinger strike for of at least 3 come to your aid, if Im not busy, and have the ap points.

I plan to be nice to everyone and not threaten anything unless really pushed. It's to risky for a low end player to do much else.

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

I've only had to threaten the one guy, so far; our end of the world seems pretty peaceable, Long Bow. And I didn't bring up guild rankings, actually; I just reminded him that an alliance war is not what either of us would want, and he backed off. I like Atomic's "fake it 'til we make it" philosophy, though.

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

True Arithea, our area so far has been peacfull, thankfully. I don't intend to rock the boat for some time unless provoked excessively. Oh and I extend the same elite slinger strike force for your aid as well

Lol--thanks. My few phalanx, slingers, ram ships, and ballista ships are also at your disposal, should you need their assistance.

Haha, until I showed up. I've sacked six different people six times in the last two days (36 strikes). My warehouse is brimming with the spoils of war (at level 5) and I'm waiting for may first colony to go live There are so many easy pickin's around here it's going to be hard to stop... especially when y'all got my back

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

Lol! Yeah, I've pillaged one inactive guy, but I've kept the rest of my pillaging down. The people on the islands on which my cities reside all seem very cool; I wouldn't want to piss them off. They'd all come after me at once.

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

That's exactly why I don't make friends with my neighbors...can't even look at their messages...I'm afraid I'll get attached and pillaging them would make me feel something sad inside.

Re: Defense strategy: "Threatening messages"

Lol!! So far, I haven't needed to pillage, though. I'm totally good for most stuff with trading. I'd hate to see the poor bastard who tried pillaging me or one of the other guys on my island; we're both members of alliances and we've both sort of got each other's backs. The world would swiftly descend upon this wretched individual and wreak havoc upon his lands.
