Re: How to pillage like a man and how to protect yourself.
how can you tell if a town is a colony or main?
I've been pilaging and blockading (with just a single ram-ship) some towns ... all level 2 and 3 towns with zero military score and a gold score over 10k. I just realized these might be outposts for some big dog elsewhere. I've got a level 2 wall and ram-ship in my port just in case, but I figured it'd be better to avoid picking a fight w/ someone that's gonna stomp a mudhole in my ass.

You cant, but their total score is an estimate of their population (with added factors), so if you see a level 4 town with a total score of 1500, its a colony.

Yes.
The number of ships does not factor in how much you gain from blockades, the number of ships will help you though if the enemy or other player attempts to make a breakout.
The whole purpose of a blockade is to intercept any incoming or outgoing trade ship and have them re-route to your city.

the report showed nothing on them just a dash next to defensive power. And I dont have any spies currently to check it out.

Re: How to pillage like a man and how to protect yourself.
anyways I got a question, in the first post it talks about their goods and that if they have alot you'd want to bring extra cargo ships with you, how do you go about doing that?
edit- one more question :P in the combat report does it say what you looted? Because I just pillaged a small town and it says loot at the botton of the report but nothing after that and when my first ship arrived back I didn't get any report on anything or see any of my resources go up

Do ships also require upkeep?

Yes they do, look under research and then unit. A piece of gold will show the upkeep for each unit.

Code:
Battle for Rocktown
Mexicanu from Mexicania vs El_Gringo from Rocktown
Offensive power: 3,450 Offensive power: (216) 216
Defensive power: 3,920 Defensive power: (491) 491
Stamina: 1,272 Stamina: (108) 108
- Town wall: 5%
Combat is finished
Victors: Mexicanu
Remaining troops (-Losses)
Phalanx 50(-1) Phalanx 15(-6) 15(-6)
Archer 50(-1)
Mexicanu from Mexicania has won the battle and pillages Rocktown.
Loot
Gold: 307 Building material: 170 Wine: 10 Marble: 14 Sulphur: 1
This is a warning. Early plundering may be useful but later on you are going to need a absolutly huge advantage to make use of plundering.
At the time I had 60k gold, 900 wine, 1500 marble and about 50 sulfur. They had a huge advantage and beat me handly. But they got nothing and I only lost 6 phalanx. Considering the guy attacked me from two islands away he might have broke even or came out a bit ahead.

Re: How to pillage like a man and how to protect yourself.
What idiot sends Phalanx on an attack mission? If he'd sent 50 Swordsmen, you'd be hurting much worse.
I really dislike how hard it is to get gold from pillaging. Don't really understand it.

Archers are more powerful than swordsmen. Phalanx are tougher (therefore lasts more battle rounds) than swordsmen.

Re: How to pillage like a man and how to protect yourself.
I realize that, but Phalanx have awful attack ratings, just as Swordsmen have awful defense ratings.

You are correct. At the same time if the pillager got tons of stuff each time they attacked it would be very destructive to players that don't stay up 24/7. This attacked happened just as I was logging on. I thought I was dead and all my stuff was a goner.
I suspect once they implement the "General" tech it will be more useful too the pillager and also be punishing to the looser with out being devastating.
