    Noob needs help

Ok fellas, I need some help here. I think I have a decent start on my town going but I am not quite sure where to go from here. I can't start trading until sometime tomorrow since I am researching Expansion. I am maxed out on scientists so I am thinking of upgrading my academy from level 2 to level 3. Wouid that give me more scientists to speed up my research I need to get done? I have almost 4000 gold and a 1000 in building materials and my population is 118/146 so I am doing pretty good there. I just increased my workers to the mine to increase my marble. I have a trading post, warehouse, port and barracks built that are all level one. I have no military established yet. Any suggestions on where to go from here. Once my expansion research is done I have a couple requests to start trading with other TGers so that will help. Thanks in advance

    Suggestions from a recent noob:

    1. Defense - you are nice target with so much resources sitting around and no military. Build 6 slingers and a ramship (when you have a shipyard).

    2. Research - definitely upgrade academy as much as you can and max. out your scientists.

    3. Resources - split your population between wood and marble collection. Try and keep your gold income at 0. Use your people to collect marble/wood instead because you can get more gold from collecting and selling resources than from having them sit around as citizens. 2 lazy citizens gets 8 gold/hour, 2 marble collecters get 1 marble/hour and if you sell the marble for 20 gold that's the equivalent of the making 20 gold/hour (compared to 8 gold for sitting on bums).

    4. Pillage inactive villages! - easy way to get even more resources

    5. Medium-term goal = start another colony!

You will always need coin. You must pay you troops, maintain your ships, and you may find yourself in need of something. I try to keep my citizens making money and everyone else working. Build a tavern, keep them drinking and you population will grow.

Faster your population grows, the faster you will need to expand your town. At higher levels, its hard to keep up with the growth.

    My 2 cents.

1 You'll want to upgrade your city wall to atleast level 4. Make your enemies need seige weapons to steal your stuff.

2 Start upgrading your Barracks and Shipyard. You need a level 3 Barracks for Swordsmen and level 4 for Phalanx. You need a level 3 Shipyard for Ballista ships.

3 Upgrade you Warehouse as high as is resonable. Keeps your resources from being lootable.

4 Upgrade City all as needed for continued population growth.

5 What ever you do DO NOT upgrade your Trading port just keep it at level 1. If you do upgrade then your enemies can take more loot from your city per pillage.

6 Add and upgrade new buildings as they come along as needed.

I usually upgrade buildings except City Hall on a lowest resource needed basis and work my way thru the city. City Hall I wait until I'm close to population capacity before upgrading it. This also helps keep the gold that can be pillaged as low as possible for as long as possible.

Maybe that was more like 5 cents.

    Corrected my earlier post!

BTW, I'm not saying that you don't need gold. I'm saying that you will get greater return from gathering resources and selling them (as long you sell for more than 8 gold/unit) than if they sat around as citizens.

I agree with the advice here.

If you do get your wall to level 4 and get some land and sea defense then upgrade your trading port. It becomes important. Waiting 2-3 hours to load up a large shipment someplace is a hindrance.

But it is much better than someone using your port against you. Rememeber that if they attack you knowing the you have a "navy", then they probably think that they can sink it. I have a level 8 Town hall, with a level 1 port. No problems getting my supplies.

    Re: Noob needs help

Personally, I try to stay as close to having zero gold income as possible, as far as my population goes. Right now, I have that kicked up, as there isn't a whole lot of buying and selling of goods around my island and I need another 500g or so before I can colonize. (I also need my last trade ship back in port, but that takes time.) I upgraded the crap out of my academy, so I now have all sorts of research completed. Soon I'll be beefing up my defenses a bit, which I haven't (yet) had a reason to do, as my part of the world is pretty peaceable. I haven't built a tavern yet since nobody nearby is selling wine, despite the fact that there are two wine islands close by. (I'm colonizing one.)

Also of note: I hit a point yesterday where I couldn't get the resources I needed to expand without pillaging someone. I was trying to get by without having to do that, but it seemed impossible. So I picked a guy on the next island over whose town is level five or six, but who went inactive, and pillaged the crap out of him. About 500g, 2k wood, 600 crystal, and 200 marble later, I was able to expand my settlement. Lesson: Look for people to pillage as soon as resources get low, especially if you can't trade over sea squares yet. Slingers FTW.

BTW, don't worry about sending me marble once you're up and running--turns out Tarenth needed crystal and had marble, so he's got me covered for a while.

I have found that by the time you have a level 4 wall the pillaging goes way down. Unless it is an alliance war, most pillagers are out for the easy pickings.

Also, by the time you have a level 4 wall you are probably producing large amounts of the resource you colonized for.

I just ran into this problem. I tried to ship 3000 stone back to my capitol. It took 5 hours just to load it then another 1.5 hours to get it there. That meant I couldn't start building my palace upgrade until this morning. Which makes it iffy if I can colonize the sulfur island before it is full.

You are right that you need a good size navy to protect it. But 5 rams and 5 ballista ships will scare off almost everybody.

if you have a good defense, upgrading your port makes sense. 10 goods per minute at a level 1 takes forever!

Plus if you notice an attack coming you can knock it back down to a level 1.

This is why I upgrade my trading port when I have the army to protect it.
