Upgrading the wall is very much worth it. Just keep it at about the same level as your town hall to get the benefit.
After level 4 they cannot attack if they don't have siege weapons, which cuts down on pillaging a bunch.
To find the best defence add up the defence of six slingers vs two swordsmen. I think. So I am pretty sure six slingers (6x7) is better than 2 swoards (2x14).
