Your spy doesn´t answer anymore, he probably has been discovered

Does that just mean he's dead for sure? Or is their a small bit of hope left.

He is being tortured and he might give you up. He or she is a dead man.

If he doesnt answer, you lost him, they are also notified that they have captured a spy (sometimes your spy spills the beans and tells them the city that sent him, or he might say what general island he came from, or he stays mum -- higher level hideouts have more brutal interrogation techniques

one of mine was actually returned after a few days. not sure if they all show back up eventually or if it's a random thing.
