How would you rate the importance of certain goods?

Of the 6 resources:
  • Gold
  • Wood
  • Marble
  • Wine
  • Sulfur
  • Crystal
how would you rate them from most important to least important overall and why?

Interestingly enough how you rate them tells a bit about how you play.
  1. Marble - Used to expand all buildings and needed by everyone constantly
  2. Wine - Used to increase population growth and synergistic with marble for rapid population booms
  3. Crystal - Used to expand Academies to speed up research. When glass is researched it can be spent for research points as well. Initial settlements don't use much, but once you get into the higher tech branches its vital to make discoveries in a realistic amount of time
  4. Sulfur - Since I favor 'peaceful expansion through research and mercantilism' I don't use much sulfur beyond enough to create a reasonable defense. People who favor raiding need more to build troops, replace losses, and defend against retaliation.
  5. Wood - Everyone has it and its the easiest resource to get a hold of. However its vital to upgrading luxary deposits so that you can increase your income from them. I never have 'not enough' of this resource so I never think about it much
  6. Gold - Usful at the trading post and when you establish new colonies. Otherwise...not so much once you have enough trade ships in port to conduct business be it merchantile or military. Easy to get if you trade for a high interest commodity and offer it on the open market for 30-50g each.

Re: How would you rate the importance of certain goods?

Interesting thread:

1. Wood - you pretty much need this for everything, including soldiers.

2. Wine - Keeps the people happy and helps with population growth. Also, those who have the other resources need wine to improve moral. Valuble to trade for the following items.

3. Marble - To build a strong town and be able to withstand attacks by improving walls. Also, as the population increases you need to keep up with the buildings...which you need marble for.

4. Crystal - Neede for research first, without reasearc you can not expand, trade, nor defend your town. It is really a toss-up between Marble and Crystal depending on where you are in your expasnion stages.

5. Sulphur - Needed for ships and troops, although I believe that a strong defense begins with a strong offense. Once you have established your walls, the ships become more important to protect from pillaging.

I have tried to keep my resources to a minimum until I could properly defend myself, which would be now, and now I am building my military up....so now sulphur is becoming a priority.

Re: How would you rate the importance of certain goods?

1. Wood/Marble - For obvious building and expansion purposes. I rank them both the same on level of importance.

2. Sulfur - Call me a cutthroat, but with profit and expansion comes the responsibility to kick the little guys butt so none can rival and threaten your position and wealth.

3. Gold - Important for the upkeep of troops and to employ spies. Also helps with some other junk like upgrades and cargo ships.

4. Wine - All that warfare, you need drunk and happy citizens.

5. Crystal - Throw some at the scientists...give em something to do.
