empty handed
Sometimes when i try to buy stuff from people i get a message saying that ym merchants got away "empty handed" and i didnt get any of the resources, waht is this all about? and is there any way to prevent it?

It means somebody else already bought all the available resources before your ships could get there. Only way to prevent it is with a trade agreement made with a particular port.
