If you have a acedemy in a second town does it do anything?

Yes, all academies work together in research.

Yep, every bit helps, but the process only starts reducing your research time by one hour each upgrade. I run two level 10 academy's, and a level 9 academy.

Yep, also keep in mind that 3 level 5 academies does not equal 1 level 15 academy.
