If you send in spies they should open the gates, but I would send a ram anyway to be safe. You should probably send a spy anyway to check out the terrain before you go in.

Re: do i need a battering ram to pillage a lvl 8 town
You only need siege units if the wall is level 4 or higher so your best bet is to send a spy in and take a look.
Also if you send multiple spies they will each have a chance to open 1 gate and cause a breech. However if they fail and you have no siege units in the attack your units will get turned away.

Considering his miltary score (13k) I would send a spy to see if a pillage is worth the effort.

Are you sending ships with your troops, and is this guy on an island seperate from you.
If you answer no to the first and yes to the second, then the troops are running away from the fleet. The ships that carry the troops will run at the first sight of a enemy ship in the harbor.

Re: do i need a battering ram to pillage a lvl 8 town
Do you "NEED" a battering ram? Because I know I have attacked 4+ walls with no defenders, and did not bring a ram and got through. And I am pretty sure I have attacked 4+ walls with defenders and no battering rams and got through fine.

I don't think that you need them. I was attacked and defeated and they had no siege that I could see. I think my wall at the time was level 6 or seven. I don't think they had spies.

I dont think walls keep the enemy out anymore. I think it's just harder on the attackers.

you don't have to do anything, except have the trade ships. It all depends on the lvl of the guy's trade port.
