I am undecided as whether to have a sulfur or cyrstal colony.

I have a good trade friend 1 island away form me who supplies me with sulfur as and when I need it, but I don't want to rely on him all the time.

How important is crystal going to become if ever?

you need crystal for the academy upgrades, palace 3rd level and up, workshop upgrades to troops, spys and speeding up research once you've studied the glass research. I've probably missed something but these are off the top of my head.

Sulfur seems to be for military use only which based on future game upgrades will become more important but it still seems a fairly common resource at the moment. Just check how many of us have loads of sulfur to trade in the classifieds sub forum.

If you don't do much pirating (and you mostly trade/build) then I'd suggest CRYSTAL as you will need a heap of it for your next palace levels. You don't need sulphur for buildings, only for making military units. So only if you're a big pirate think about sulphur.

Perhpas I should enter into the pirate ways of sulfur, crystal seems a boring road for now.

I can always buy crystal or build another colony of that later on after my new venture.
