Advice for first colony

I am only a few days in but am nearing my first colonization.. I basically just need the resources to make the move. I was wondering if some of you vets could give me some advice.

My capitol, Skagway, is way out in Cledios[96:83]. The market in this area is pretty weak - trade options in a 3-island radius are poor. I need access to luxury resources, especially wine and marble. Ideally I would like to get a colony closer to some other TG'ers (since I am aiming to join TGA at some point). Should I locate near or far?

I am assuming a wine colony is my best bet (my capitol is a crystal colony), am I correct?

Is it also correct that rapid expansion is the key to this game - that I should commit resources to colonization rather than continue expanding my capital.

Last question - what's considered a normal growth rate? My tavern boosted me up to 3.5% but now I seem to be sliding back in to the 1.5-2.0%. Is that normal?

Re: Advice for first colony

I would suggest getting a marble colony next. You can usually find people selling wine for cheap or members of the community that are willing to donate. I dont suggest founding a colony far away from your home port because you will eventually find the need to start shipping resources back and forth and the distance will hinder you greatly.

There is always the option of viewing the map and founding a new colony near some TG folks then making that new colony your capital. Sir Nerd and I are on the same island at 38:83 (Kaiyios). If you try and move to one of the TG hot spots you may find yourself in the middle of a war zone

Re: Advice for first colony

Would a capital relocation make sense now because my capital is so young and small? I think it makes a lot of sense for us to group together, but I don't know too much about this game yet.

Re: Advice for first colony

IMO, relocating the capital is easier to do earlier on in the game. At my point on the Beta server, I have 4 total colonies and while I'd like to move closer to other TGA'ers, I'd have to abandon where I've already spent a lot of time / money.

If you make the move earlier, though, you've got less losses to cut and can reestablish what you currently have sooner.

On the other side of the coin, I've been able to expand my money and military pretty quickly (again on Beta) by having all 4 colonies on tangent island. So if you do expand close to your capital, all of the colonies can support one another.

It all depends on what your goals are and how you want to play the game...

Re: Advice for first colony

I think I want to play the game with the TG empire in mind.

Please provide me suggested neighborhoods for relocation as well as anyone who is willing and able to provide assistance. The move should not require many ships as my population is just over 200 and resource numbers are fairly low.

Also, I assume the plan is to establish a colony in the new neighborhood, relocate all my stuff, and then make that colony my capitol?

That is good advice from tuoply (hmm…two-ply). Cut and run BEFORE you spend a ton-o-cash to build up. Your first colony is just a random computer selection anyway and might not be the best for you so toss it if you want. In a few weeks the only 2 resources that you will need daily is Marble and Wood. Wine is nice but you cant build anything with Vino.

Marble and Crystal are good - and yeah, relocate to the south-west quadrant... 6/7x : 7/8x is our hood

OK, I'll plan on setting up a colony in the TG hood shortly!

Do I get any cash back when I demolish my old capitol? Is there any method to doing this?

I can send you some donations once you get setup to help get you back on your feet. Send me a message in-game as a reminder.

Re: Advice for first colony

I'm actually going to need donations just to make this move - at this point about 8k gold and 1k wood!

My capitol is only level 4 with a pop of 221 - it is not putting out at a fast pace yet, probably because I've put everything into research.

Re: Advice for first colony

Don't forget you need 5 ships, 12k and 1250 wood to make the move. If you have the ships then your almost ready to move since you have 8k and 1k wood already.

To get the remaining either sell off any excess resources you can or if the market isn't any good in your area you can shift people from research to resources to cash production to get what you still need.

Start scouting for your new location now. You don't want to wait until the last minute. Keep in mind your second colony location. Since you'll probably be able to expand to it fairly quick at this point since you know the game better and will have better access to resources thru the TGA network.

Re: Advice for first colony

Pft...right now you are in a prime position to remake your fortunes as you see fit.

The first thing I believe you should do is find a marble island in the TGA sphere of influence and set up a colony there. Then build a palace (easy to do since its only wood) and make it your new capital before demolishing everything in your old capital. Ship everything you've got to your new capital and abandon your old city.

Once that's done you're back to square one with a marble capital to boot. Then you should think about making your first colony either a wine colony (marble + wine = fast growth) a crystal colony (crystal + wood = large academies and later faster research) or a sulfur colony (sulfur + wood = strong military).

It might be best to think of your play style before you decide on what to choose. You should also realize that by moving into the TGA sphere of influence you'll have a substantially larger number of trading partners so perhaps the goods you need are only a shipment away.

Also don't forget to think of the wonder of the island you colonize. I'm pretty sure all the temples of gaia are full up (+10% marble) but you should adamantly avoid Poseidon (improved naval costs which don't work) and Colossus (improved defense which is a doubled edged sword and doesn't work). Hermes (cheaper cargo ships) and Ares (cheaper land military) are good choices if you can't get one that improves your collection rate.

Thanks tarenth for the wonder info - did not think of that.

I have settlers on their way to Engios [69:82] - a Hermes wine colony. ETA 8 hours from now.
