what is considered a large army?

i currently have:
15 bastilla ships
30 swordsman
20 phalanx
is that a good sized army?

That depends on what you want to do with your army and what you are trying to defend.

Its a fair sized army, but its not going to stop anyone if they are motivated to attack you. The best defense is a low level port and an empty treasury.

Ya like kormendi said it kinda what you want it for...if you are going to be attacking a bunch as well as getting into trouble what you have it not enough really. But it also sounds like you only have one city? in which case what you have is pretty good for where you are at. Spies are probably one of the best defenses imo, also if you are near the 6x:8x cluster you are pretty safe. I mean you might get attacked once, but it will not be more then that haha.

To put things in context, I am saving up for my 5th town (4th colony). To do so I have been pillaging like crazy in my sad corner of the world.

My main town's garrison:

50 Phalanx (upgraded)
60 Archers (upgraded)

My level 16 town has a level 16 wall.

My other colonies are about level 12/14 and they have 20 phalanx plus some pillaging archers. I do my best to ship most of my booty to my main town.
