Game not playable anymore

I'm going to continue to be out of the JO loop for who knows how long. Updating my vid driver has runied my JO graphics (specifically FPS with foliage, trees, and water) to the point of unplayability. Rolling the driver back isn't an option as it makes newer stuff even *more* unplayable.

I've been troubleshooting and researching this endlessly for a few days now, so... until I figure out a work-around, roll my driver back, or buy a new vid card, I won't be seeing you fine folks in JO for some time.

Crap.. That sucks Mirfee!

Can you fill us in with some details? Video card make/model? Driver versions?

Re: Game not playable anymore

ATI Radeon 8500 All In Wonder 128mb
Latest Catalyst driver (as of 10/14, but same problem since previous update).

Running on...
P4 2.4 w/ 768mb RAM

What bums me out is that this same hardware has run the game *absolutely fine* (on low settings... but good enough for me). Now, even on 640x480 I take a *massive* FPS hit when I face any areas with lots of grass/bushes, trees, and occasionally water. When I experienced this the first time with the previous update (several weeks ago) I rolled back the driver and the performance was restored. But I had upgraded in order to use DX 9.0c to play FullSpectrum Warrior (which is heavily corrupted without both being current).

I'm at a loss...

Re: Game not playable anymore

Mirfee,

Have you ever tried the Omega drivers? I've had pretty good luck with them and no corruption issues.

It could also be that you've got some artifacts that are corrupting your update. You should use a utility like DriverCleaner to get rid of all the old files. Here's how I do it.

Download new drivers
Unplug the cable modem
Uninstall old drivers
Reboot into safe mode
Run DriverCleaner
Install new drivers
Plug in modem
Reboot
Play

Re: Game not playable anymore

Well, I've downloaded both, but I must admit to being a bit wary of a third-party driver. You're the only person, Bear, who I know that has used one. I need to research this a bit more and see how it's rated in the community (if at all). But thanks for the tip... it's definitely on my 'options' list.

Re: Game not playable anymore

Well... tried all the above out. No problems so far, but no improvement either.

Have you tried installing the older working driver? You should be able to uninstall the driver and install the existing driver that was working for you.

This actually *did* work for me when I originally discovered the problem. Unfortunately, I need the update for *other* stuff. What I am left with, either way, is an option that makes one app non-functional in favor of the other.

And thanks for the contact person. I'll be keeping this in my (short) list of possibilities!

Re: Game not playable anymore

Well... interesting side-effect in all this. *All* my other games are benifitting from the new Cat driver (which I reverted to... with no benifit from the Omega driver I saw no need to go with a third-party). I can max or nearly-max my graphics on all the other games I still play... and ones that had to run on lowest for the longest time and still suffered are now gorgeous and smooth (Raven Shield and Americas Army... woo-hoo!). At least I'm getting something for my loss of JO

Have you tried re-installing JO? Or having it re-detect your video card?

Re: Game not playable anymore

Yes and yes.

The interesting thing here is that this is pretty much a repeat experience to when I updated the drivers a year+ ago and had my Raven Shield / Americas Army performance go down the drain (not surprisingly both, as they run on the same graphics engine). There is a definite disparity with JO, my graphics card, and the generation of driver running it. RvS/AA is my comparison experience - we're talking an improvement of unbelievable scale... previously I'd have *minimal* playable FPS on the lowest settings (plus predictable slowdowns for special effects)... now I get 70-90 *average* on highest/nearly-highest settings. I can only assume that it'll take a fundamental change in future driver(s), and/or a new card, and less likely, a JO update, before I'll see this game return to acceptable performance.

Re: Game not playable anymore

That just sucks Mirfee...I hope you find an acceptable solution soon...

BTW- Is your AA game still working? Maybe this would be an opportunity to kick some games of that off...
