Gameplay???

So what is the JO gameplay like on TG?

Is there anywhere close to the teamwork and organization of the old Ghost Recon games?

Is there a decent single player element to JO?

Are the public JO servers worth playing on?

Would I need the JO expansion pack to play with TG?

Another comments on JO for an old GR player would be appreciated.

Quite a bit more action oriented than GR.

Teamwork? Yes, but it's at a faster pace and due to the respawns is more about an entire battle than just a single firefight like in GR. Organization? Thank goodness, no. Actually, a bunch of TG folks are playing in a very organized, umm, what is it? a tournament? a league? Anyway, you'll have to ask Luna about that, as it's not my cup o' tea...

Nope, just some basic training missions.

There are some decent ones out there. The nature of the game itself encourages teamwork to accomplish the objectives, since most servers host Advance And Secure (AAS) games.

Again, no, thank goodness. Right now TG is running a free mod to the original game. Read the thread on the Reality Mod for more info.

Re: Gameplay???

There are a few coop missions you can play, but they all suck ass as the Ai is completely lame. In fact the AI don't have any I, and are a joke for a modern day game. If you're thinking you can do GR type mission in JO - forget it, play OFP instead

As for online, AAS stands for Advance And Secure. The map consists of multiple spawn points. At the start of the game each side will control some spawn points and there will be ones that stand in the middle that neither own. The objective is to take all the spawn points though if time runs out, the side with more ground wins the day. Other game types are DM, TDM, TKOTH.

It's very run and gun, though the new reality mod stops this though it introduces too many naders as shooting is now a lot harder due to realistic recoils. Also BF2 is soon to come out and that may see a lot of players jump onto that.

If you've ever played a delta force game from NL, then it's that. Same style graphics, movement, etc. You get vehicles to use (helo's, jeeps, apc's) and the expansion gives you more vehicles (Tanks, apache's, motorbikes). Bare in mind BF2 will give you all of this stuff in one game.

If you plan on playing on the Nova public servers, be prepared for cheats. HAcks aplenty are out, as is cooping (where a team will have one player on the other side, using TS to relay the enemy positions), or cooping2 (where people have 2 pc's running the game and use the second PC with that 'player' on the other side. Vehicle stealing is going on, where players will steal enemy vehicles and take them 60 miles across the map and just camp them. Basically, vehicles left without players in them will eventually blow up, and then respawn back at their respawn point. Camping vehicles stops this, and is cheating. Also the parker hack, a full blown cheat (plus all the others out there we don't know about), makes everyone glow red or yellow (red indicates parts of the body that can be hit, yellow not hit) - this glow goes through terrain, buildings, etc. Nova are doing practically nothing about this and PB is pretty much a joke.

I would steer clear of Nova servers and go with the private one's. Obviously TG but AGE server is a good one (Adult Gamers Elite). There's also IC - International Conflict which runs a campaign style game that has ranks in it (though you don't go round calling people sir, it's purely there for organising the battles). As Cing said, see Luna about this, she really got into this as did quite a few guys and it looks very worthwhile.

The game is also very buggy, though the reality mod seems to have helped out a little here, but that is a little buggy too ( skin selection doesn't tally, killed by med pack - not sure if this is common though - but it is the beta version and they are working on this so expect an update soon).

If you don't play on a reality mod server, then you can expect worse gameplay imo. Severly run and gun with random bullet spread and the ability to hit targets more accurately on the run sidestepping, than prone on the ground - it is very much a case of if you stop, you die.

Personally I would wait for BF2 to come out which I don't think is a long way away, unless you don't have an issue with cashflow. Nova are also working on a patch that the community is pretty much hoping will fix all the issues with the game. It's typically been that Nova fix 1 thing, and break 3 with each patch. If this next patch doesn't work out, you may see more people dropping the game. If the patch fixes things, you will probably see more people coming back to it.

Hopefully that gives you an idea of the climate of JO but if you have any Q's, just ask

Re: Gameplay???

Thanks for the feedback.

My interest was really piqued because I can get a copy for about $18 CDN, used at an EB.

But looks like GR is still where it is at for me.

Re: Gameplay???

Many of us are very involved in JO, and keep the gameplay standards high. TG has its own server, which runs punkbuster and hasn't ever had any cheating issues. If we go pubbing, we keep to punkbuster servers to have the cheaters dealt with, and always attempt to work as a team. It's much larger than GR, in both map size and in troops, which changes the way you strategize. We still work in small fireteams, but the objectives are very different.

Personally, I have come to really enjoy JO. I haven't found it to be run-and-gun, provided I'm not wasting my time running solo on a pub. I mean, I wouldn't have enjoyed GR if I played on UBI, either. It's all about the people you play with.

And for $18 bucks, you have nothing to lose!

Re: Gameplay???

Well I used to be of the same opinion as Jex, But I got a better PC with better vid and more ram, and it changed my mind. If you have less than 512 and a vid card less than a 9600 ati or equivalant then don't bother you will only make your self mad. That said when i got things pushed up to run it good I learned to love it, and the Reality mod rocks.

Re: Gameplay???

Exactly. JO isn't the problem. Jex's crappy ride is the problem .

Kidding. Jex plays lots of Lomac so I guess he has a more than adequate computer.

I would LOVE IT if other games would incorporate OFP's map, though. Or at least the topo part. Any game that attempts to be a tactical sim ought to have topo maps.

The reality mod has saved JO from silliness IMO. I got pretty sick of the game because it penalized everything but bunny hopping from what I could tell. With the reality mod, you can still bunny hop, but you can't hit anything while you do it and it won't stop someone from killing you. Knock yourself out if that's your thing I guess.
