Minimizing comm traffic
We all say things that are important to only a few other teammates. Sometimes we say stuff that isn't even important at all. I want us to try keeping comms as clear as possible.
NovaLogic has kindly created voice messages that can help players work together. We have TeamSpeak but these voice messages are still useful. Instead of asking for a ride over TeamSpeak, ask for one using F10, 6. These means press F10 then 6 (not the numpad). It gives a visual cue (icon beside nametag and on map) to teammates of your position and a voice message. TS can't light up your position to teammates. There is also the F10, 0 key that asks for passengers. I'm trying to make a habit of asking for passengers this way when I operate a vehicle. The previous voice bind can be used for acknowledgement. Declining the offer can be done by F10, 2. We spot targets all the time but we often have trouble explaining where the enemy is located. Try out the F10, 7 key to create a marker on the map where your crosshair is pointing. It cuts down on a lot of explaining and clearly defines the enemy's position. This could also be used for mortar fire but will not receive the accuracy benefits that the target designator gives. When a teammate falls and a medic is on the way to revive, we can call on comms but there is another way. First, the fallen teammate should be looking at the map for nearby medics. Second, the medic should acknowledge the fallen teammate by using F10, 9. This will say, "Medic on the way!" and let your teammate know you are going for a revival. Try exploring the built-in voice messages and see what is useful. Start remembering which keys to press for most used messagse. Doing every little bit to cut down on voice comms allows it to be used for high priority, complex messages. Examples are laughing |

Re: Minimizing comm traffic
Be aware too that the ingame comms broadcast map wide -- you'll still need to monitor usage so as to not overly disturb player somewhere else. Of course, usage of the JO Radio Communications SOP we wrote would help.

Re: Minimizing comm traffic
I have found it quite common for pilots and drivers to yell, "Bail" at critical moments. I actually had an instance when a pubbie pilot typed it to me. It definitely is a good thing to do. It's too bad there isn't a binded voice message for that because I think broadcasting it over comms can be confusing to others.
I think an assumed interpretation of binded voice messages will become more common. Asking for a ride or passengers should be obvious. Just take a look around for a flashing name. Players asking for rides will have a special icon for easy identification. Also, it doesn't take long to check the map to see if it's the player is nearby. |
