Re: Chopper Tactics
What also works nicely is that the LALO drops gives a natural spacing to the troops. If you do a traditional approach all the guys pile out from one location. A well timed RPG can kill a whole squad. This is very unlikely with the LALO drop.
The other nice advantage is that the enemy force just sees the pass. If the troops can get prone fast enough they have no way to know how many guys are getting out. ![]()

Re: Chopper Tactics
Better yet if the chopper can take advantage of terrain, ie, if there's a rise between the base and the LZ, the chopper can stay low enough in LOS to the base that a defender wouldn't spot the drop... just the flyby. Then the troops approach with stealth.

Re: Chopper Tactics
We've been getting used to the game by playing co-operative missions over a LAN, so I'm curious if the situation I'm about to describe occurs when on-line.
I've noticed that when we Helo in to enemy territory, land and evac the Helo to attack the bad guys. If we completely abandon the Helo for any length of time, when we return to it, it's vanished. I can't be certain that it's not been attacked by the enemy, or that it's toppled over and crashed, but in either case I'd assume some signs of debris. Has anybody else noticed this, or do you pilots hang on to your Helo when you've got one, so nobody else can take it off you? Regarding tactics: I noticed you can use your binoculars whilst piloting the Helo, providing you come to a hover. And since you can also access the commanders map, I'd suggest the Helo would be useful as a mobile command post. |

Re: Chopper Tactics
All vehicles self-distruct when abandoned outside their original spawn-zone. They do, however, respawn at that same originating location so long as the server isn't set to deny this.
I'm sure this is to prevent vehicles being stolen or hoarded. The only way to keep a vehicle intact (other than getting shot up by the enemy) is to stay attached to a position on board.

I'm starting to see now that a dedicated pilot is a good thing. They are able to fly around the map and pick up people who find themselves far away from the action and speed them into location. Since you rarely get more than 5 people in a blackhawk you may as well just use the smaller birds as they are faster and more manouverable. When the pilot drops off one lot, there's always more people to pick up. It's quite possible for a good pilot to fly the same chopper for a long time. The blackhawks for me are better used for aerial assaults. You only need one gunner, fly NOE to the target area and then take her up about 100-150M. Now circle the target area, making sure your turn rate is constant. This is critical because you gunner will know how to fire the chain gun in relation to the turning motion of the helo. Since you'll always be banking it means only one gun is useful - the other is pointing up into the sky. Your gunner can lay down a crap load of fire, kill the contacts and distract the enemy whilst your forces move in. I think the best tactic is to keep circling until you get shot down because of the distraction value. People want to shoot at choppers. Meanwhile the assault force is about to shoot them in the back. If you make yourself a medic as well, you land by fallen comrades and heal them. |

Re: Chopper Tactics
I'd be happy to become a dedicated pilot. I can't hit crap with my rifle anyway

Re: Chopper Tactics
LOL that's what made me decide to change. The ballistics for rifles in this game drop far too early, according to numerous replies to posts I've read over at NW. That may be why people are having probs. Apparently the dot also moves too much, something the last patch was meant to fix but hasn't helped me much.
Need to try some stinger eveasion btw and see what, if anything, works. |

Re: Chopper Tactics
We'll go over it again jex, but what H said is true: if you're OUT of your seat, you can exit immediately when the pilot gives the ok. I think what we were doing is trying to exit from a fixed sitting position, and that's what was throwing the timing out of whack.

From now on I pilot. That is it. I'll take a medic, an M4 (might as well be a catapult), and an AH6 or Blackhawk. I enjoy flying through the gaps in trees and stuff and I'm taking every opportunity to practice my flying skills. Perhaps the reason there are so many snipers is because the other guns suck. |

Re: Chopper Tactics
I don't mind missing people all the time, but I don't like it when I'm prone with an M249 and spray someone from 50M, and they turn around bunny-hopping and kill me with a headshot first shot. I only play on punk-buster servers and this still happens? Is there some skill I completely lack? How do they do this?

Re: Chopper Tactics
This game is soo nuts usually, Guys running all over the place. I have no clue how you can be a rifleman and be even remotely successful with the # of snipers around.
Public play is all about kill numbers for most players. I laid prone on a hill last night and watched as my team mates (who I didn't know) drive in circles around the enemy spawn point shooting into the spawn point. cirlce after circle shooting guys as they spawned. If FF would have been off and they would have slowed down I'd have shot them myself!!! It was ridiculous. My most enjoyable time to date has been playing coop with 6 to 8 of our own guys on a fellow gamers locked server. I know this game has potential but it will change us as tactical players which isn't all bad. And not change us to mindless freaks running all over the place but change us to be able to adapt to the "new" battlefield we're on. should be fun and interesting. |
