Re: Advanced sniper tactics

About point #5, JO is different from other games. In JO, whenever a shot is fired you get a thing on your minimap showing where the shot came from. As a counter-sniper, I use that every single time a shot is fired. Once I'm aware of an enemy sniper, I get to a position where I can spot them (and if I'm a sniper I'll go to a location where I can hit them without them seeing me). Their first shot tells me where to look, so I pull out the binoculars (or the scope on my sniper rifle if I have it). Given about 10 seconds I can spot a sniper who has bad cover. It takes about 30 seconds to spot a sniper with good cover. If you pick a really good spot, or if you pull back into a bush, I may never spot you. It's best to move before you're spotted. If you shoot a second time and I see the flash, you're dead. The flash from your second shot will point me straight to you, at which point I can either fire my own sniper rilfe at you, or if I'm not a sniper I can get around behind you and take you out. In some cases I'll go to the armory and temporarily become a sniper to take a sniper out quickly.

Don't shoot from predictable locations. I search along ridges to see a profile (common in snipers who want cover if they start getting shot at, unfortunately for them, that cover allows me to see them and I only need one bullet to kill them. Windows from buildings are also quite common, as are lying next to rocks (again for cover and concealment). As a sniper, you're best off ignoring cover altogether. Look only for concealment (like a bush). Cover is what counter-snipers look for, so don't be where they expect you to be. Besides, you can pull back into a bush and become completely impossible to spot. This works best.

As a sniper, I usually hide in a bush near an enemy helocopter base. As soon as I hear the helicopter starting up, I move out of the bush and shoot the pilot, when I confirm he's dead, I go back into the bush. From that location and with that technique, you can hit 3-4 times safely. More than that and a counter-sniper will have finished searching all the areas with cover and start looking at areas with just concealment. You have about 60 seconds after your first shot to make the the other 2-3, and then if you don't want to die it's time to move.
