Re: Custom
I belive I explaned this to you in theory at CSS last night.
You use GFCScape to take the levels, models and textures out of the .gfc files found in SteamApps folder. After you have found the materials, models and maps you "unzip" them to your left4dead folders materials go to materials, maps go to maps and so on.
When ingame you can then type to console map de_dust2 and it'll load it.
I haven't tested this but I know it'll work.
EDIT: Same goes with ZM. You just gotta copy paste the materials, models and maps and put them to L4D folder at materials, models and maps and you are all set.|TG| Kebab-Kastike reporting for duty. | Why? Tubes! The internet is tubes!

Re: Custom
This does work and I have seen it talked about many places. When SDK is released L4D will blow up with all kinds of cool custom mods etc.
