Check out my thread about setting up Hammer for L4D. You can do things for L4D without the official SDK release by setting it up manually.

But you need the Orange Box for that, not L4D, right?

I don't know.
All the needed files should be there even you wouldn't own orange box because of all the mod teams using orange box engine.
