    Custom Campaign - Dead City

    Name: DeadCity
    Type: Campaign / Versus
    Maps: 5?

    This map is in beta. It has been in testing for about a month!

    In some areas it looks really detailed. Other areas, somewhat bland. Awesome work pre-SDK however. Check it out!

    Beta 6 map, released 1/25/09

    Its pretty good. Of course, no SDK so many rooms are kind of bland. 5 cresendo events for the first map, rough gameplay per team is actually 20-25 minutes, even with fast run through. Plenty of infected ladders but could use a lot better placement. Has pistols placed around as you progress that only one person can pick up per pistol.

    We should have a new custom/mods server coming online this week, and this will be the first map we put on there.... more details to come!

    can be fun and its a very big map.

    takes a while to load so if you see a black screen when you first start that is what is supposed to happen give it a minute or two to finish up.

    Hopefully we'll all get a chance to play this map soon as the map maker is looking for more feedback!

    Installation:

    LEFT 4 DEAD DEADCITY SERIES (BETA)

    THIS IS A BETA TEST (1-5) DeadCity Series, more maps will be available soon.
    You will need to have winrar or compatible extracting program.
    All files downloaded will be using *.rar (filename.rar).

    INSTALLATION:

    1.) EXTRACT: "left4dead folder" where you can find it.
    --> If you use winrar, you can extract directly to the location below instead.
    2.) LOCATION: "C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead"
    3.) TRANSFER: left4dead --> LOCATION (Overwrite Files & Folders)
    4.) This is where the files should end up: C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\

    Make sure you don't double up folder...
    DO NOT DO THIS BELOW --> C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\left 4 dead\left4dead\left4dead

    3.) TRANSFER: left4dead --> LOCATION (Overwrite Files & Folders)

    the phrase overwrite made me a bit nervous
    I spoke to W6 who said no actual files are overwritten and its only new files added
    I then went in folder by folder and transfered files to my L4D directory and can confirm the files are all new additional files
    I loaded the game and played the map on our new server without a hitch (its normal for the loading screen to go black and take a long time, its a huge map)

    Don't worry about the overwrites. All the precious files are packed in archives that contain all the original stuff. You can add texture called brickwall01.vmf that'll overwrite the original one, but if you delete that you can see the original again, as it loads it from a pack file that contains all that info.

    The other day I joined through steam group and started playing it... then I left to play vs. But it doesn't seem to be there today.

    now the dead city server has no mercy on it

    Re: Custom Campaign - Dead City

    Fun map! My notes from playtest:

    • We had issues with gigantic hordes and a director on an amphetamine drip.
    • Long map for the entry to a campaign. I'd move saferoom up by 1/3 at least.
    • Nice to allow infected to go through window grates ... would be even better if they could go through chain link as well. Otherwise it's too hard to get high when survivors are in the street near ambulance, and impossible to pounce them when they are moving through the sidewalks.
    • Zombies path to the top of the ambulance when survivors are inside. We had two instances of zombie dance parties while fending off hordes.
    • Movement is glitchy in front of the white cabover semi, after the ambulance. I got stuck there as both survivor and infected.
    • The infected climb path that goes from the semi trailer top was not problematic for me, but why not also allow the climb path from the bottom of the wall instead of requiring the truck path? Seems unnecessary and slow, and a bit illogical (if they can climb there, why only from the trailer top?).
    • I had a client crash when I used my Fraps screenshot key the first time I used it. Later had no problem. (I don't know why but Fraps and L4D have a love-hate relationship. Dead bodies sometimes jump when I take a Fraps screenie.)
    • Maybe square halo around the moon started the apocalypse?

    Superhorde (this is just the front of the line)

    How'd this one get in here?

    That's a really big map. The horde def has a strong advantage on that map especially on advanced.

    On the first elevator though, fyi if you happen to have an AI, they can get buggy and won't go on the lift with you. they just path from room to room and I had to tk the AI.

    Think I caught a stair case or 2 that had a bunk door that you clipped into if you tried to immediately shut it...its toward the end. Lots of nooks and corners that I don't know if they are necessary really.

    Pathing-wise, there's some random zombie climbing on the fence when some of the horde busts out along those narrow fenced in walk ways...instead of chasing you head on, they stop and climb a random fence.

    B for zombie/horde content (alot of redundancy in the houses), B+ for overall visuals, B+ for variety, But overall I give it a B for now on just solo =) !
