L4d makes my router reboot
What the hell?
I have NEVER seen or had this issue with any other game in the 2 years that I have had this router. L4D itself runs great but whenever I attempt to play multiplayer, I get as far as the server listing telling me what games are available. I try to join one of them, it looks like it's trying to and then all the lights on my router go out and then back on just as if I mashed on the power button.
I don't understand how a game can make my router turn off and on by itself.

Skylark says he has the same problem.
I don't know what kind of hardware you guys are using, but I could update the firmware on my router.
You guys could try going into the website of the company that made your router and searching if there's way to update your router firmware.|TG| Kebab-Kastike reporting for duty. | Why? Tubes! The internet is tubes!

I have a speedtouch 585v6 with firmware 6.1.4.3
This isn't the latest firmware but I'm running it for a reason so I can tweak SNR margins with a 3rd party app.

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
What do you mean exactly by server listing? Like, the rooms where it says '3 games for Dark Carnival Expert' etc etc?
Does this also happen if you click the 'Servers' button at the bottom of your steam games window?
If either of this is a yes, it's very likely that Steam is requesting information from the servers to quickly for your router.
Go into Steam, go to file>settings>downloads.
What is the speed set as?
Does this speed match your average connection speeds?
If it's higher than your connection, lower it to what you believe it should be.
Did this fix the problem?
If not, try lowering the speed further.
Does this fix the problem?
If the download speed setting is too high for your internet connection, Steam will attempt to request information from servers meant for that setting, causing a Denial of Service style shutdown. Lowering this setting will mean that Steam will request information at a slower rate, allowing your internet connection to handle the requests.

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
Steam is set to 'Fibre/10meg'
My connection is 20meg.
I'll drop it to the 'Cable/2meg' option but if it cuts my Steam DL speed down to that I'm raising it again.
It hasn't happened again anyway.

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
The Steam DL speed won't (shouldn't) drop, it's simply trying to figure out what your connection can handle for server requests, disguised as a 'download' setting.
(I'm sure it has other uses for it being that way, one of them being their equipment survey which checks what hardware/software/internet connection you have.)

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
I dont get how a game could possible reset a router without busting the signal or power level for upstream or downstream. Unless, L4D2 is activating another process or service thats also affecting your network, or there is some conflict elsewhere. But then again you said it hasnt happened since, maybe there were other issues that day?

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
Happened again today, clicked on "Campaign" then "Play Online" then the router restarted, but trying again 5 minutes later worked fine, I don't get it.
It's not a crippling issue so I'm not all that worried about it, but it is a giant "WTF" moment for sure...

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
XP or Vista or 7? What is your ISP? I know you already mentioned its not a big issue and only sometimes happen but I'd like to at least know whether its not on XP.

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
For kicks, I'd suggest knocking your 'download' setting down to the lowest setting and seeing if it seems to get rid of the problem (or if it creates another one, which may or may not be related).
If not, you may want to ask Steam Support.

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
Did you ever get any further with this? I have the exact same issue. (SpeedTouch 585 v6.1.4.3)
The connection will usually drop when attempting to join an online game in L4D or L4D2. I can play other games just fine

Re: L4d makes my router reboot
Hello AlexB
You have the exact same router and firmware as me, I assume you also use the DMT tool?
Since my last post here I have never had any trouble. All I have done is disable UPnP and reduce the 'CafeRate' (Details here: Clicky)
