Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
Quick tip on the Expert mode:
1) Dont F*#$ with the tank just run like hell, every boss has a time duration which they will expire.
2) when you see a hunter, melee like moto and he will never touch. I promise.
3) if 2 hordes comes and all else fails, run to the corner with your team. Have 2 infront (crouched) for constant melee and 2 standing giving support.
4) Avoid the witch as much as possible. I dont care if she looks like Pamela to you, just dont even look at her once you know where she is. If you can't than do what celestial told you.
5) Close all doors you once you've pass them. Some rooms provide a respawn space for the dead players. If they are open than it is unusable for respawn. Closing doors behind you will provide a delay from zombies that will flank behind. They also give you better chance to defend yourself as they are tightly packed for good shooting.
6) Invite me and you'll see the light of day

Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
Here is an obscure tip that you probably already noticed:
If you empty your magazine/clip, your reload will take slightly longer than reloading with at least 1 bullet still in there.
Other random tips/facts
Hunting rifle = 1 shot 1 kill against a zombie (infected) on any hitbox on expert
Headshot = kills any zombie with pistol damage on expert (non boss)
4 hunting rifle shots to the head against a witch on expert will kill her (funny if you do it all at the same time because she flew backwards when we did, counted to 3 to shoot simultaneously) Of course, she was blocking our way (to some tasty orange juice)
You can melee a witch around when it is charging its special attack. The witch's touch kills in one hit (no revive), but after that use it has to recharge. During this time it attacks like an infected but you can stun it with less effect while it is beating you up. It is also easily killable if you unload your autoshotty into its face at close range anytime. Running or walking, there is no difference when moving closely past a witch. The best thing to do is to run right past it. Staying close to it will eventually make her angry. If she goes from growling to getting up, you can still reset her by running away so she goes back to crying.
Flashlights alert zombies to your presence at a range. So does fast movement.
Tank = 8000 hp on expert (random fact)
Watch out for zombie rain (when you suddenly see distraught zombie stock brokers fly out of windows and falling ontop of you).

Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
On versus, having flashlights on or firing also allows the boss infected to see you through the walls. If you don't need 'em, flip them off.

Firing your weapon (without the flashlight on) on versus will also give your position away.
Be aware, though, that they have psuedo-nightvision; hiding in a dark corner with no flashlight on is only good for THEM, if they already know where you are.

Die. No, seriously. If you're at the end of a map and you're on less than 50 health, get a teammate to kill you and take your stuff. As soon as the survivors get to the next map, you'll respawn on half health.
It helps more than you would expect.

Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
Yeah getting your teamate to kill you for more health is not intended I'm sure. If you play the game hardcore you shouldn't have to exploit it. Why would I risk killing the person that is gonna help keep that hunter off me?

Sorry, but there's now way you can justify killing a teammate.

Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
Purely an exploit of the game. Do not post it in these forums and topic, as this is for the discussion of TACTICS, not CHEATING.
Lately I've found a lot of uncoordinated fighting in expert... Here's some basic tips.
Formation
Open areas: I usually find it best to do a diamond-1 cover front, 2 cover sides, 1 covers back/supports others. Weaponry also helps in this position-Shotgun in front, Automatic weapon in back, automatic/shotgun on sides (independent, whatever works best for the players on the sides).
Enclosed areas: 1 crouched 2 standing 1 crouched. Shotguns preferable on crouched players, automatic/shotgun on standing.
General tip: If you're in front of someone else... STOP STRAFING TOWARDS THEM!
Beginning of the Campaign
Really, something simple, call out what weapon you're taking, so that there aren't 4 shotguns in a crowd. Yeah, they're powerful, but sometimes that one SMG or Assault rifle can take out that smoker long off who is dragging your sorry self away, without even having to pull out a pistol. You don't have to be the one to change weapons, but if someone in particular is willing to switch, they shouldn't have to figure out what weapons are going to who.
In the frying pan
When the horde is coming, there are quite a few options to take (organized easiest to hardest to coordinate)
1) Locking yourselves in a room: Honestly, just have everyone stockpile in the bathroom, and shut the door; when the zombies break a hole in the door, fire away at them (be careful not to damage the door more than is necessary; one wrong move and the door can and will come off of it's hinges, allowing the flood.
2) Finding a small corridor of an area: an example are the white moving trucks, on Death Toll, or the Subway area of No Mercy. Have 1 or 2 people adopt the crouched melee position, while you have as many as possible stationary in the back firing into the horde.
3) Corners: In an urban area, have your team fall back to the nearest intersection of walls; Again, 2 in front meleeing, 2 in back supporting.
4) Back-to-back: Seems to be the hardest to coordinate, yet should be one of the more useful in a fully surroundable position. We should try to pull the coordination off for this more often, to see how useful it is or not. I've never been able to keep the group calm enough during a rush to pull it off.
And that's enough for now.

Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
On VS mode, sound is your best sense, if u hear a boomer right there, just shoot right there, the 90% of times u will kill that boomer who was sneaking arround. Bullets can hit trought walls and trees, so dont think about it 2 times before shoot if u hear them.
Also a nice tactic with those sounds in VS, if u hear a boomer/hunter and u are sure it comes from the other side of the corner, just keep advancing, and when u are going to cross the corner, make 2 or 3 steps back. 50% of times the boomers/hunters will fail their special attacks, time to enter, pull and kill
Now as Hunter, there is sometimes an experienced player survivor who thinks he can melee any hunter arround. He´s ok, he got nice timing and not so many hunters can evade that , plus sometimes ppl uses scripts for uberfast melee attacks. So, if u get pwned 2 times by the same "melee-guy", the next time u want to pounce into him, make it by 2 leaps, one to their side (left or right), and the finish one to him, becouse the melee spam blocks by a 45 degree range, and doing that doesnt let them see a **** in a dark area, so usually they dont know where u are after the 1st leap.
For more skilled hunters, if u are on indoors and u must hit that experienced survivor, leap to a wall first, and use that wall to make the 2nd leap to go for him.

Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
Sorry, I wasn't aware that exploiting game mechanics counted as cheating. No hassle, I know that now and I won't say stuff like that any longer.
Here's another, (This time hopefully allowed) tactic.
If you're getting towards the end of a level, and a tank pops out, send the person who it's attacking to dash to the safehouse and close the door. The Tank will keep trying the bash down the door, and will ignore the other players. Get the person to pick up an assault rifle/uzi and shoot through the bars at the tank until it dies.

Re: Tactics for Surviving the Worst of L4D
That one will only work on the safe rooms at the end of a level. The ones at the beginning of a level pose as much challenge to a tank as any other door.
